Anderson wrestling spoils Knights home opener

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Preseason nationally ranked No. 19 Anderson University defeated St. Andrews Presbyterian College 38-6 on Saturday afternoon in a wrestling dual match. The Trojans (2-4) spoiled the Knights (0-2) inaugural NCAA Division II home dual contest.

Anderson freshman lightweight Nathan Fleming (Milford, Del.) started the afternoon with a late pin against sophomore Kyle Craver (Lexington, N.C.). Fleming posted the fall with only 14 seconds left in the match to give the Trojans a quick 6-0 lead.

St. Andrews forfeited the 133-pound class giving Anderson a 12-0 advantage.

Freshman Bryan Seal (Orange County, Va.) put SAPC on the scoreboard with a win in the 141-pound division. Seal had two escapes, a reversal and a takedown against freshman Chris Francis (Columbia, S.C.) in route to the 7-4 decision.

In a tight bout, junior Trojan T.J. Selke (Irmo, S.C.) held off Knights freshman Elliot Hogge (Yorktown, Va.) at 149. Selke scored three points for the visitors with the slim 4-3 decision.

Anderson’s lead grew to 21-3 halfway through the day after St. Andrew forfeited the 157-pound class.

Freshman Eric Frick (Roaring Springs, Pa.) posted a dramatic 3-1 win at 165-pounds for the Knights with a sudden death takedown over senior Matt Godwin (Hahira, Ga.) pulling the score to 21-6.

Seal and Frick both improved to 2-0 in dual meets on the season.

The Trojans won the final four matches of the day to take the 38-6 victory. AU junior Nick Niesielowski (Ellijay, Ga./174 lbs) notched a 18-10 major decision over freshman Will Harcum (Williamsburg, Va.) while classmate Jared Skinner (Moore, S.C./184 lbs) had the second pin fall of the day. Skinner finished freshman DJ Chverchko (Loretto, Pa.) at 5:31. Junior Justin Smith (Valdosta, Ga./197 lbs) held on for a 9-5 decision over freshman Alex Mathews (LaGrange, Ga.). Senior heavyweight Aaron Lambert (Irmo, S.C.) concluded the wrestling with a 17-4 major decision over junior Charles Richardson (Virginia Beach, Va.).

St. Andrews will host local foe UNC-Pembroke on Thursday, November 30 at 7:00 p.m. Anderson will visit UT-Chattanooga next Saturday at Noon.
