PEMBROKE, N.C.—Freshman Will Harcum (Williamsburg, Va.) recorded pins in his first two matches of the day as the young St. Andrews Presbyterian College wrestling team gained more valuable experience at the 26th Annual UNCP Pembroke Classic on Saturday.
The Knights, who were competing in only their second competition since establishing an NCAA Division II program in 2006, had six wrestlers post 10 total wins including three pins and two major decisions.
Harcum, battling in the 165-pound weight class, increased his team-high pin total to five falls after two open tournaments. Harcum pinned Mitch Cornett (King – Unattached) 3:37 into the opening round of the tournament and then stopped Ed Buckley (UF) 1:34 into the second round. Harcum was finally defeated in the round of 16 by runner-up Justin Ranson (Carson-Newman).
Freshman Bryan Seal (Orange County, Va.) opened up his day with his second major decision of the season. Seal defeated Richard Vaught (SMC) 8-0 in the first round. Seal, who narrowly lost 9-7 in the second round, picked up a 7-3 victory over Jean-Paul Appollon (Belmont Abbey – Unattached) in the wrestleback bracket.
The Yorktown, Virginia, duo of junior Brian Roznowski and freshman Elliot Hogge also picked up two wins apiece for the Knights grapplers. The 157-pound Roznowski garnered his second major win of the 2006/07 season with an 11-3 victory over Daniel Torres (Duke). Roznowski also defeated Blake Germaine (Cumberland) 8-6. The 149-pound Hogge led off with a 7-2 decision over Marquis Camp (Limestone) and also earned a 4-1 defeat of Curt Jones (UNC-Pembroke).
Freshman lightweight Kyle Craver (Lexington, N.C.) notched his first collegiate pin fall on Saturday, stopping Joshua Villalta (Mercyhurst) at 2:34. St. Andrews unattached lightweight Eric Brown (Norfolk, Va.) had two wins at the Pembroke Classic including a 3:07 pin of Willie Jarman (Newberry) and a 12-2 major decision over Russell Hilton (UNC-Pembroke – Unattached).
Freshman DJ Chverchko (Loretto, Pa.) tallied his first collegiate victory with a 4-3 decision over Rick Lindqusit (Duke). Chverchko lost his other two bouts in the 174-pound weight class by slim 6-4 and 6-0 scores. Junior heavyweight Charles Richardson (Virginia Beach, Va.) and 184-pound freshman Alex Mathews (LaGrange, Ga.) both dropped two matches on the day.
St. Andrews will compete in their inaugural NCAA Division II dual match on Thursday when they visit Limestone College (Gaffney, S.C.) at 7:00 p.m.
