CHARLESTON, S.C.—Freshmen Eric Frick (Roaring Springs, Pa.) and Will Harcum (Williamsburg, Va.) each won three matches on Saturday as the St. Andrews Presbyterian College wrestling team competed in their inaugural NCAA Division II era tournament at The Citadel Open on Sunday.
The Knights grapplers and first year head coach Joe Baranik won a total of 11 matches in the opening competition of the 2006/07 season. Six of the eight St. Andrews wrestlers in action picked up at least one win on the day.
Freshman Bryan Seal (Orange County, Va.) put the Knights in the record books by posting the first take down, first win, and first major decision with a 14-6 win against Spartanburg Methodist’s Roy Steele. Seal, who finished the day 2-2 in the 141-pound weight class, also edged Belmont Abbey’s Jean-Paul Appollon in a close 5-4 decision.
Frick made a great run at the 165-pound title winning his first three matches before having to medically drop out of the finals. Frick (3-1) started the day with a 56 second pin fall over Robert Waddell of Spartanburg Methodist. After advancing past UNC-Pembroke’s Fletcher Roberts 3-2, Frick recorded his second pin fall of the tourney. Frick downed Zachary Filter of the host Bulldogs in 1:22.
Harcum tied Frick on the day with three wins in the same 165-pound division after posting a team-high three pin falls. Harcum’s 4:17 pin of John Murray (Spartanburg Methodist) was the Knights first pin fall of the programs NCAA D-II era. Harcum (3-2) also had two first round pins in consolation matches against SMC’s Robert Waddell (1:00) and Limestone’s Greg Satterfield (1:23).
Juniors Brian Roznowski (Yorktown, Va.) and Charles Richardson (Virginia Beach, Va.) each opened up their wrestling careers at SAPC with a win before dropping the next two. Roznowski posted a 15-2 major victory at 157 lbs over Duke University’s Danny Torres. Heavyweight Richardson supplied a 5-3 decision over SMC’s Adam Gibson.
Sophomore lightweight Kyle Craver (Lexington, N.C.) also notched a win at The Citadel Open defeating Newberry’s Willie Jarman with a 16-8 major decision.
Freshmen DJ Chverchko (Loretto, Pa.) and Alex Mathews (LaGrange, Ga.) also competed for the Knights in their inaugural competition. Both of which went 0-2 on the day.
St. Andrews next competes in the UNC-Pembroke Wrestling Classic on Saturday, November 11.
