Whitbeck Awarded All-Conference Honors

LAURINBURG, NC—St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s lacrosse midfielder Corey Whitbeck has been selected to the 2004 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference All-Conference First Team on Monday.
The freshman had an outstanding year in SAPC’s inaugural season leading the Knights with 26 points, 23 goals, three assists, 69 shots, and 75 groundballs.
Corey’s season highlights featured a team-high six goals, including the game winner, against Averett College and being named to the D-II honor role on March 9th by www.womenslacrosse.com.
The Newark, NY native should be a solid offensive force for the Knights in the next three years as the women’s lacrosse program continues to develop. |
FDU Women’s Lacrosse Defeats SAPC With 2nd Half Surge

LAURINBURG, NC—Corey Whitbeck and Erin Masterson’s six combined goals for the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s lacrosse team was not enough as Fairleigh Dickerson University scored 11 second half goals en route to a 16-7 victory on Wednesday afternoon.
The host Knights looked very strong in the first half scoring the first two goals of the game from Masterson (Matthews, NC) and Terrell Wood (Houston, TX). Kerry McCarthy (New Egypt, NJ) scored the Devils first goal 9:17 into the game on a Kristen Marlatt (Ocean Township, NJ) pass.
After swapping goals, Masterson tallied her second goal giving the Knights another two-goal lead, 4-2, with 15:29 remaining in the first half. FDU would score the next three goals and take a slim 5-4 halftime lead.
The Devils then pulled away scoring six of the first seven second-half goals to build an 11-5 lead. Fairleigh Dickerson would add a couple late scores to take the nine-goal victory.
Marlatt led the Devils with four goals and three assists while McCarthy finished with four goals. Six different players scored the FDU’s other eight goals.
Whitbeck finished with three goals, one assist, and a game high 18 groundballs for SAPC. Masterson scored a season high three goals while Wood added the Knights other goal.
Jenn Kessler (Madison, NJ) picked up the win in net after making eight saves and allowing six goals in 46 minutes of playing time. Allana Sowell (Decatur, GA) make 10 saves but allowed 16 goals in the loss.
St. Andrews (1-8) will have a 10-day break before hosting CVAC foe Limestone College on March 27th at 2:00 p.m. Fairleigh Dickerson (1-2) will not have much time to celebrate their first win as they will play Methodist tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. |
Guilford Defeats St. Andrews Women’s Lacrosse, 11-4

LAURINBURG, NC—Kathryn Hyde (Pownal, ME) connected for three goals and three assists as the Guilford College women’s lacrosse team defeated St. Andrews 11-4 on Wednesday afternoon. The Quakers (1-2) picked up their first win of the season while the first year Knights fell to 1-5.
Guilford jumped out early and maintained the momentum in the first half scoring the first eight goals of the game. The Quakers also out shot SAPC in the first period, 13-7. Katie Gilligan (West Newton, MA) scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 22:54 mark on a pass from Hyde.
The Knights improved their play after halftime scoring the first goal of the second half, a tally by Terrell Wood (Houston, TX). Both teams would then score three more goals in the period as the Quakers held on to win by seven.
Moira Foley (Freeport, ME) would add two goals for Guilford while Gilligan finished with three goals and two assists. Lauren Goodwin (Newburyport, MA), Kate Hardy (Baltimore, MD), and Sarah Routhier (North Yarmouth, ME) finished the scoring for GC.
The Knights had four different goal scorers including Wood, Corey Whitbeck (Newark, NY), Nikki Heath (New Bern, NC), and Melissa Collins (Webster, NC). Whitbeck also chipped in with an assist on Collins goal.
Brandi Rhoads (Walnut Creek, CA) picked up the win in net for the Quakers allowing four goals on 15 shots while making six saves. Allana Sowell (Decatur, GA) took the loss allowing eight goals in the first half. Stacey Mike (Pikesville, MD) kept the Knights in the game during the second half making five saves while only allowing three goals.
St. Andrews will host their first CVAC game this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. against Lees-McRae. |
Whitbeck's Outstanding Play Honored

LAURINBURG, NC—Freshman lacrosse player Corey Whitbeck was recognized on Monday for her outstanding play last week by www.womenslacrosse.com. Whitbeck was named to the Division II Honor Role.
Only three players are named to the D-II honor role each week for their great play. Whitbeck, a Newark, New York native, tallied 14 goals and 1 assist in four games last week.
Corey led the Knights attack in a 12-9 victory over Averett on Thursday afternoon; the first win for the first year program. In that game, Whitbeck scored six goals and had one assist.
Whitbeck also leads St. Andrews with 15 goals and 16 points through five games. |
Women’s Lacrosse Picks Up First Ever Win

DANVILLE, VA—The first year St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s lacrosse program collected its first win of the season and existence in only their third try. The Knights defeated Averett College, 12-9, on Thursday afternoon to improve to 1-2 on the season.
SAPC grabbed a huge 8-3 lead in the first half and held on in the second half to win by three. The Knights out shot the Lady Cougars 30-25 and collected more ground balls, 22-14.
Freshman Corey Whitbeck (Newark, NY) continued her good play with six goals and one assist on seven shots while coming up with nine ground balls. Terrell Wood (Houston, TX) and Erin Masterson (Matthews, NC) each tallied two goals for the Knights. Masterson also contributed with one assist. Nikki Heath (New Bern, NC) and Melissa Collins (Webster, NC) scored St. Andrews other two goals.
Joana Johnson and Tiffany Weinkopff led Averett’s attack with four and three goals, respectively.
Whitbeck scored the eventual game-winning goal with 21:30 left in the second half. That goal gave the Knights a comfortable 10-5 lead. The score ended up close at the end as the Lady Cougars scored four of the last five goals.
Junior goalie Allana Sowell (Decatur, GA) recorded her first win of the season in net making 11 saves over the 60 minutes.
As of March 9th St. Andrews’ stand at 1-4 overall, but have played two nationally ranked teams. The Knights should be able to use that experience to build on for the rest of the year and in the future.
The Knights host Guilford College on Wednesday, March 10th at 4:00 p.m
