MISENHEIMER, N.C.—Junior Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, N.Y.) scored with 51 seconds left in regulation to lead No. 5 seed St. Andrews Presbyterian College to its first ever Conference Carolinas Women’s Lacrosse Tournament victory, 12-11, over No. 4 seed and host Pfeiffer University on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Knights (7-11), who also set a new program record with seven wins on the season, trailed by two goals heading into the final five minutes of the game but scored three straight goals to eliminate the Falcons (8-9). The SAPC victory is both the first conference tournament win in the program’s five year history but also the first win against league rival Pfeiffer (who has been nationally ranked throughout the year).
The Falcons scored with one second left in the first half to take a slim 7-6 lead at halftime. Pfeiffer scored the first two goals of the second half to take its largest lead of the contest at three goals. After trading the next two goals, St. Andrews finished the game on a 5-1 run to take the one-goal victory.
Junior Katie Wright (Waterloo, N.Y.) tied the game up for the sixth time at 11-11 with her second goal of the afternoon with two minutes and 26 seconds left setting up Binggeli’s game-winning heroics.
Binggeli had a team-high four-point performance with three goals and one assist. Sophomore Kerrie Brown (Irondequoit, N.Y.) added a hat trick while Wright and freshman Alexis Goldman (Winter Springs, Fla.) each added three points with two goals and one assist apiece. Freshman Kim McDaniel (Joppa, Md.) scored the Knights final two goals.
Junior goalkeeper Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, N.Y.) made 14 saves for the victorious Knights.
Pfeiffer held slim 31-29 shot, 17-15 ground ball, and 13-11 draw control advantages.
St. Andrews will advance to the semifinals for the first time in the programs history. The Knights battle No. 1 seed and host Limestone College on Saturday morning.
