LAURINBURG, N.C.—Sophomore Kelley Duffey’s (New Hope, Minn.) eighth-point of the afternoon, the game-winning goal with 1:52 left in the game, completed a second half rally by No. 9 nationally ranked Queens University of Charlotte in a 15-14 Conference Carolinas women’s lacrosse victory over host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on a cold and wet Sunday afternoon at Knights Field.

The Royals erased a five-goal deficit in the second half to earn the one-goal victory, improving to 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Junior Katie Wright (Waterloo, N.Y.) had a hat trick and three assists for the Lady Knights, who fell to 3-7 and 1-5.

Duffey scored the first goal of the game but St. Andrews bounced back with the next three goals to take an early 3-1 lead. Queens netted the next two goals but the Knights responded with another three-goal outburst to take the lead for the rest of the first half. St. Andrews built a 9-4 lead with their third three-goal run but the Royals cut the halftime deficit to 9-7 with the final three tallies of the first half.

Sophomore Kerrie Brown (Irondequoit, N.Y.) led all scorers into the intermission with three goals. Knights’ freshman Kim McDaniel (Joppa, Md.) and Royals’ senior Carolynn Loan (Cazenovia, N.Y.) each netted two goals in the first 30 minutes for their respective teams.

SAPC regained a five-goal lead with the first three goals of the second half.

The Royals, who stayed within striking distance because of a perfect 6-for-6 accuracy on free-position shots in the game, pulled to within one (12-11) with the next four goals including two on free-position opportunities.

Junior transfer Jill Donofrio (Elbridge, N.Y.) doubled up the St. Andrews lead with her first goals in a Knights uniform but freshman Alyssa Hughes (Gaithersburg, Md.) answered with a Queens’ goal just 20 seconds later.

Freshman Alexis Goldman (Winter Springs, Fla.) upped the Knights lead to 14-12, scoring a goal with 17:37 left, but St. Andrews would be held scoreless for the remainder of the afternoon.

Sophomore Amanda Martin (Geneva, N.Y.) and junior Kelly Wrightson (Gaithersburg, Md.) tied the game up at 14-14 for the first time since the score was 3-3 with back-to-back goals.

The scoreboard remained tied for the next 10 minutes until Duffey finally fired the game winner in the final two minutes.

St. Andrews had a couple late chances but Royals’ junior goalkeeper Logan Canale (Orlando, Fla.) came up with 10 saves to preserve the victory.

Sophomore Elise Moore (Wexford, Pa.), normally a defender for the Knights, played her first career game in goal for SAPC and matched Canale with 10 stops.

The two teams battled closely in every statistical category with St. Andrews holding a slim 30-29 shot advantage 16-15 edge on draw controls while Queens had more ground balls, 14-12, while committing fewer turnovers, 17-13.

Duffey finished with a hat trick and a game-high five assists while Martin had a team-high four goals.

Goldman had two goals and one assist for the hosts while the junior duo of Kelsey Binggeli and Courtney Ross – both from Newark, N.Y. -- each scored one goal.

St. Andrews will celebrate ‘Senior Day’ on Wednesday afternoon when they host non-conference Greensboro College at 4:00 p.m.
