Queens' lacrosse spoils 'Senior Day'

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Four Lady Knights were honored on Sunday afternoon as the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s lacrosse team celebrated ‘Senior Day’. No. 9 nationally ranked Queens University of Charlotte won the CVAC showdown 17-9.

Corey Whitbeck (New York, N.Y.), Meghan McAuliffe (Poway, Calif.), Emily Robertson (Fairhope, Ala.), and Michelle Cattani (Dallas, Texas) were all recognized before their games as the four seniors on the St. Andrews roster.

The Royals scored 11 first half goals en route to the nine-goal victory to improve to 7-4 on the season and 4-2 in the CVAC. The Knights fell to 4-9 on the season and 1-6 in the conference.

Senior Jill Durgin (Golden, Colo.) and junior Amanda Mahle (Baltimore, Md.) scored in the opening minutes for Queens to give the visitors the lead for good. Sophomore Farran Sanders (Hickory, N.C.) put St. Andrews on the board with a free-position goal.

Junior Sarah Hannon (Sykesville, Md.) doubled the Royals lead with a goal in the sixth minute but sophomore Katie Wright (Waterloo, N.Y.) once again pulled the Knights to within one, 3-2, with a fast-break goal off a nice pass from freshman Kerrie Brown (Rochester, N.Y.).

Queens broke the game open with the next three scores to pull out to a 6-2 lead. The Royals scored five of the final seven goals in the first half to take a commanding 11-4 advantage at halftime.

The two teams split the first four scores of the second half before Queens went on a 4-0 run build its largest lead of the day, 17-6. St. Andrews scored the final three goals of the day to cut the final deficit to nine, 17-9.

Brown led the Knights attack with four goals and an assist. Whitbeck, sophomore Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, N.Y.), and freshman Elise Moore (Wexford, Pa.) also scored for the Knights.

QUC out shot the Knights 37-23 and won 17-of-28 draw controls.

Hannon, Drugin, and sophomore Kelly Wrightson (Gaithersburg, Md.) all had hat tricks for the Royals. Freshman Kelley Duffey supplied a game-high five assists to go along with a goal.

Senior Sarah Kahle (Jackson, N.J.) made three saves in the first half to earn the win in net for the visitors while sophomore Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, N.Y.) had a game-high 15 stops for SAPC.
