New Haven rallies past SAPC women's lacrosse

LAURINBURG, N.C.—St. Andrews Presbyterian College led for most of the first half but the visiting University of New Haven women’s lacrosse team out scored the home team 10-5 in the second half to pull out the 18-12 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman Kerrie Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) led the Lady Knights, who fall to 3-7 overall, with five goals and an assist. The Chargers earned their first win of the season (1-1 Overall) behind a game-high seven goal performance from sophomore Mallory Ferrandiz (West Sayville, N.Y.).

Freshman Sarah LeGoff (Manorville, N.Y.) put the visitors on top early with a free-position goal exactly 60 seconds into the game but SAPC stormed back with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead. Senior Corey Whitbeck (Newark, N.Y.) started the Knights scoring while Brown notched the next two goals.

Sophomore Brigid Brady (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) cut the New Haven deficit to one with her own free-position score but two more Knights goals gave St. Andrews it largest lead of the day, 5-2. Freshman Elise Moore (Wexford, Pa.) and sophomore Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, N.Y.) scored during the Knights run.

St. Andrews continued to lead 7-5 before the Chargers scored the final three goals of the first half in the last three minutes and three seconds to take a slim 8-7 lead into halftime. Brady scored twice during the rally.

Brown tied the game up for the last time with a free-position goal just 1:04 after the intermission. Three more New Haven goals pulled the Chargers lead to 11-8. UNH continued its strong second half play scoring seven of the final 11 goals to pull out the six-goal victory.

Both squads took 30 shots and St. Andrews held a slim 18-14 advantage on draw controls. However, the Knights were flagged for 33 fouls while being carded seven times. New Haven scored five goals on 13 free-position attempts.

Ferrandiz added an assist to her seven goals to finish with a game-high eight points. Brady finished with five scores while LeGoff totaled four goals and an assist. Freshman Traci Cornwell (Albany, N.Y.) chipped in with a goal and a helper while sophomore Brianna Kenworthy (Holden, Mass.) completed the New Haven scoring.

Binggeli almost matched Brown’s five goal and one assist total with four goals and an assist of her own.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alison Wagner (Collingswood, N.J.) made seven of her nine saves in the second half to lead the Crusaders defensively during the comeback. Sophomore netminder Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, N.Y.) had nine also had nine saves for the Knights.

St. Andrews will host CVAC foe Belmont Abbey College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
