No. 7 Pfeiffer women's lacrosse escapes SAPC with 16-14 win

LAURINBURG, N.C.—St. Andrews Presbyterian College scored on 74% of their shots but No. 7 nationally ranked Pfeiffer University held on for a 16-14 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women’s lacrosse victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman Kerrie Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) scored a game-high seven goals for the Lady Knights, who fall to 3-4 on the season and 0-4 in the CVAC. Senior Alycia Schwarz (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the undefeated Lady Falcons (3-0 Overall; 2-0 CVAC) with four goals.

A senior Corey Whitbeck (Newark, N.Y.) goal just 1:54 into the game gave St. Andrews an early 1-0 lead. After Pfeiffer tied the game back up, the Knights took their final lead of the day on Brown’s first goal in the 6th minute. The Falcons responded with three goals to take a two goal lead but Brown tied the contest back up at 4-4 with consecutive tallies.

The Falcons surged ahead 8-4 with the last four goals of the first half in the final five minutes.

SAPC came out of the intermission on fire and tied the game again at 8-8 with four goals in the first six minutes. Sophomore Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, N.Y.) had bookend goals between another pair of scores by Brown during the Knights surge.

After a Falcon senior Jenn Gappert (Annapolis, Md.) free-position goal, Whitbeck tied the game for the fifth time with her second goal of the day. Pfeiffer finally pulled ahead for good with five straight goals to take a commanding 14-9 advantage with 11:05 to go. However, the Knights once again rallied back.

Brown started the run with an unassisted goal and sophomore Katie Wright (Waterloo, N.Y.) added back-to-back scores to pull the Knights within two. Senior Brenna Clark (Wellington, Fla.) upped the Falcon lead to three but Binggeli and Brown answered for SAPC with a goal apiece. Brown’s seventh goal of the game pulled the Knights to within one with just under five minutes left but St. Andrews was held scoreless from then on. Freshman Heidi Karaszkiewicz (Glen Burnie, Md.) added an insurance tally for the visitors in the 58th minute as Pfeiffer took the two-goal victory.

Sophomore goaltender Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, N.Y.) once again had a strong performance in net for the Knights making a game-high 17 saves. Senior netminder Kristen Kibler (Crownsville, Md.) had three stops to earn her third win of the year for Pfeiffer.

Brown’s seven goals was a season-high for the freshman. Brown also had two assists to tie the St. Andrews record for nine points in a game. Binggeli finished with a hat trick while Wright added an assist to her two goals. Sophomore Jitase Hall (Newark, N.Y.) chipped in with one helper.

Clark and freshman Ashley Hill (Ellicott City, Md.) each had three goals for the Falcons. Hill tied Schwarz with a team-high five points each adding a pair of assists. Gappert totaled two goals and one assist and sophomore Patricia Hunter (Rockville, Md.) notched two scores.

St. Andrews will next host Regis College (Colorado) on March 10 at 1:00 p.m.
