BELMONT, N.C.—Belmont Abbey College scored 12 second half goals to break away from visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College Wednesday afternoon for a 20-11 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women’s lacrosse victory on Wednesday.

The Crusaders improved to 3-1 on the year and 2-1 in the CVAC, while the Lady Knights dropped to 2-3, 0-3 in the conference.

The Abbey never trailed in the match, scoring first on a goal by freshman Tara Chmil only 13 seconds into the game. The Knights tied it up on a goal by sophomore Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, N.Y.) six minutes later but Belmont Abbey scored the next two and led the rest of the way. A goal by Shannon Farden with one second left on the clock gave the Crusaders an 8-5 lead at the break.

St. Andrews scored first in the second period as Binggeli (Newark, N.Y.) found the back on the BAC net to cut the lead back down to a pair of goals but the Abbey scored the next three to take control. After another Knight tally by senior Corey Whitbeck (Newark, N.Y) made it 11-7, the Crusaders rattled off five consecutive goals for a 16-7 advantage.  St. Andrews rallied late with three consecutive goals by Binggeli to make it 17-11. However, Farden, sophomore Samantha Hooker and freshman Laurie Jordan all struck in the final 2:30 to put the game out of reach.

Chmil scored a game-high seven goals and assisted twice in her first collegiate match and Farden finished with four goals and an assist. Jordan struck three times with two assists and Hooker tallied twice. Freshman Chrissy Stokes and sophomores Meghan Darley, Theresa Nolan, and Kerri Gut all scored a goal in the match.

Binggeli led the way for the Knights breaking the SAPC single-game record for goals in a game with eight scores while tying her career-high of nine points by adding an assist. Sophomore Katie Wright (Waterloo, N.Y.) and freshman Kerrie Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) each netted a goal.

Sophomore goaltender Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, N.Y.) played the entire match in goal for St. Andrews, making 16 saves in the loss. Kate Gavin improved to 3-1 in goal for the Abbey.

St. Andrews will try and get back on track when they host non-conference Presbyterian College on Saturday with first draw at 12 Noon. The Knights defeated the Blue Hose 10-9 last season.
