LAURINBURG, N.C.—Freshman Kerrie Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) scored two goals and sophomore goalkeeper Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, N.Y.) made 20 saves but the No. 4 nationally ranked Limestone College women’s lacrosse team still pulled out a 14-4 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference victory over host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Marissa Pesce (West Babylon, N.Y.) paced the Lady Saints (1-0 Overall; 1-0 CVAC) to the season-opening victory with five goals. McCaffrey kept the Lady Knights (0-1 Overall; 0-1 CVAC) in the game with 10 saves in each half.

Limestone out shot St. Andrews 43-12 and won more draw controls, 14-6, but SAPC held a slim 33-31 edge on groundballs.

Pesce started quickly with her first goal just 2:07 into the game. Brown tied everything back up at 1-1 with a free-position goal at the 4:55 mark. However, Limestone regained the lead for good with the next four goals over then next 20 minutes including the eventual game-winner by sophomore Shea Farrell (Blue Point, N.Y.).

Senior Corey Whitbeck (Newark, N.Y.) cut the Knights deficit to 5-2 with a free-position goal in the 27th minute but Limestone quickly answered with two more goals. Sophomore Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, N.Y.) trimmed the margin back down to four, 7-3, at halftime with goal with just 17 seconds left before the intermission. Whitbeck assisted on the Binggeli tally.

The Lady Saints came out of the break with a 6-0 run, including Pesce’s final three goals, in the first 15 minutes of the second half to pull away. Limestone seemed poised to shutout SAPC in the second half until a nice feed by Binggeli set up Brown’s second goal of the day in the 54th minute. LC added one late goal to post the 10-point victory.

Brown’s two goals were her first two collegiate scores while Whitbeck and Binggeli each finished with a goal and an assist. Whitbeck had team-highs of four draw controls and five ground balls. McCaffrey, who stopped 7-of-9 free position shots, just missed her career-high of 23 saves by three.

Sophomore Kelly Lickert (Penn Yan, N.Y.) finished with four points for the Saints including a pair of goals and a pair of assists. Junior Summer Ferraro (East Setauket, N.Y.) scored twice while both sophomores Melissa Howard (Severna Park, Md.) and Danielle Tosky (Bluffton, S.C.) had two assists apiece. Sophomores Lauren Wise (Pasadena, Md.) and Lauren Askerberg (Huntington, N.Y.) each chipped in with a goal and a helper.

St. Andrews will try and rebound tomorrow when they host non-conference Seton Hill at 11:00 a.m.
