DANVILLE, VA—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s lacrosse team used solid second half defense to take a 7-6 come-from-behind win over Averett College on Tuesday at the Cougar Den.
The Knights improved to 4-9 while the Cougars fell to 7-6.
Averett led 5-2 early in the second half, after a goal by Kaylee Black. However, three straight scores by St. Andrews, one by freshman Jitase Hall (New York, NY) and two by freshman Katie Wright (Waterloo, NY), knotted the contest at 5-5 with just over five minutes remaining. The Cougars did answer that run when Jetarwa Miles took the draw control and raced down the field for an unassisted goal with 4:47 remaining in the match, giving Averett a 6-5 lead.
The Knights remained poised as freshman Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, NY) and Wright added late goals to lift St. Andrews to the one-goal victory.
Averett did have a couple of late opportunities, as both Vanessa Jordan and Darcie Jones were granted free-position attempts. However, stellar play in goal by freshman Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, NY) kept those shots out of the net and preserved the win for her team. McCaffrey had 19 saves for SAPC.
The Cougars led 4-2 at the intermission behind one goal each from Jordan, Jones, Black, and Stacy Rinaldi. However, AU only managed to net two shots in the final stanza. Black finished with a team-best two goals, while Dawn Sheets had 10 saves for the Cougars.
Wright scored a game-high four times for St. Andrews while adding one helper. Junior Corey Whitbeck (Newark, NY) added a goal and freshman Farran Sanders (Hickory, NC) supplied one assist.
The Knights make two CVAC stops this weekend. SAPC first visits conference foe and No. 8 nationally ranked Pfeiffer University (Misenheimer, NC) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. before making the long trek Lees-McRae College (Banner Elk, NC), who they defeated 15-3 earlier in the year, on Sunday at Noon.
