ROCKY MOUNT, NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s lacrosse team jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first half in route to a 14-8 non-conference road victory against North Carolina Wesleyan College on Friday.
The Knights, winners of two straight games, improved to 3-6 overall while the Lady Bishops fell to 2-9.
Freshman Katie Wright (Waterloo, NY) started the scoring for SAPC just two minutes into the contest. Just over a minute late Haley Griffiths tied everything at one apiece. Wright answered again for the Knights with her second of the game, which gave St. Andrews the lead for good.
The Knights extended their lead to 5-1 on goals by freshman Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, NY) and Wright.
Griffith and Sarah Smith scored the final two goals of the half for the Lady Bishops around freshman Farran Sanders (Hickory, NC) eighth tally of the year. St. Andrews scored the final three goals of the first frame on shots by Wright, Binggeli and freshman Jatase Hall (New York, NY) to take an 8-3 advantage at intermission.
NC Wesleyan pulled to within three twice including the final time at 11-8 with just less than 15 minutes left in regulation. However, St .Andrews once again scored the final three goals of the half to take the six-goal victory.
Wright, the reigning CVAC women’s lacrosse player of the week, continued her hot play with career highs of nine points and six goals. Wright also added three helpers. Binggeli finished with four goals and one assist for five points. Junior Corey Whitbeck (Newark, NY) added two second half scores.
Whitbeck had team-highs of 10 caused turnovers, five ground balls, and four draw controls. Junior Meghan McAuliffe (Poway, CA) followed with five caused turnovers, two ground balls and two draw controls.
Freshman goaltender Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, NY) made 14 saves for her third victory of the season in net.
St. Andrews will visit No. 7 nationally ranked Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference rival Queens University of Charlotte on Sunday at Noon.
