No. 3 Adelphi defeats SAPC in women's lacrosse, 14-2

LAURINBURG, NC—Freshman goalkeeper Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, NY) made a season-high 23 saves for St. Andrews, but it was not enough as No. 3 nationally ranked Adelphi University won a 14-2 non-conference women’s lacrosse match on Sunday morning.

The Lady Panthers remain perfect on the season at 2-0 while the Knights, who have three losses against teams ranked in the nations top-10, fell to 1-5.

McCaffrey kept Adelphi off the scoreboard for the first nine minutes by making numerous saves but junior Diana Lopez (Farmingville, NY) finally broke through with a goal with 20:51 left in the first half. The Panthers added seven more goals in the final 14 minutes of the opening frame including a late junior Lauren Lopez (Farmingville, NY) goal with 15 seconds left to take an 8-0 advantage at intermission.

After 11 minutes of scoreless action to start the second half, AU extended its lead to 10-0 on goals by D. Lopez and freshman Rachel Ray (Rocky Point, NY).

Freshman Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, NY) cut the deficit to eight with the Knights only two goals but the Lady Panthers scored the final four goals to take the 12-point victory.

Binggeli increased her team-high goal total to 12.

The Lopez sisters led Adelphi with three goals apiece while Diana added an assist. Ray had four points with two goals and two assists while senior Jessica Marra (New Hyde Park, NY) added two goals.

Senior Dawn Anselmin, senior Lisa Maggiotta (Lindenhurst, NY), junior Tara Grodotzke ( Rocky Point, NY), and freshman Nicole Lein (Baldwin, NY) all chipped in with one goal apiece. Junior Meghan Blume (Bel Air, MD) supplied one helper.

Junior starting goalkeeper Allyson Murphy (Williston Park, NY) earned the win making two saves in the first half while freshman backup netminder Christi Kozakiewicz (Ridgewood, NJ) stopped two shots in the final 30 minutes.

The Knights battle non-conference Millersville at neutral Hilton Head, SC, on Sunday, March 12. The start time has yet to be announced.
