LAURINBURG, NC— Freshman Shannon Farden (Oswego, NY) scored seven goals including the game-winner to lead the visiting Belmont Abbey College women’s lacrosse team to a 15-11 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference victory over host St. Andrews on Friday.
The Lady Crusaders, who garner the programs first CVAC win with the four-goal victory, improved to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the CVAC. The Knights fell to 1-4 overall and 0-3 CVAC.
The Abbey wasted no time getting on the board with a Meghan Darley (Oviedo, FL) goal 12 seconds into the contest. Farden netted her first goal three minutes later to give the Lady Crusaders a 2-0 lead.
St. Andrews rallied back with the next three goals to take their only lead of the game. Junior Corey Whitbeck (Newark, NY) and freshman Katie Wright (Waterloo, NY) tied everything up with back-to-back goals while freshman Farran Sanders (Hickory, NC) fourth goal of the season on a Wright pass catapulted the Knights into the lead in the 13th minute.
Free-position goals by Antoinette Diamond (Long Beach, NY) and Farden leapfrogged Belmont Abbey into the lead for good at 4-3. The Lady Crusaders extended the lead to three by finishing the 4-0 run on Darley and Farden tallies.
The two teams traded the next four goals before SAPC scored two late goals in the final two minutes by freshman Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, NY) and Wright to cut the deficit to one, 8-7, at halftime.
BAC opened the second frame with the first three goals to take an 11-7 advantage on goals by Farden, Darley and Samantha Hooker (Salisbury, MD).
The Knights fought back with three of the next four scores. Freshman Jitase Hall (New York, NY) capped the run with her fourth goal of the season to pull St. Andrews to within two, 12-10, with 8:28 left on the clock.
Farden ended the rally by finding the back of the Knights goal twice in a 12-second span. Wright scored her fourth to keep the SAPC hopes alive but a Darley goal with 1:38 showing ended the Knights chances.
Farden, who has 15 goals on the season, finished with nine points including seven goals and two assists. Darley and Diamond both finished with five points. Darley’s five goals increased her team-high total to 17 while Diamond scored twice and added three helpers.
Wright had a team-high five points for St. Andrews with four goals and an assist. Whitbeck recorded the hat trick while providing team highs of six ground balls and three draw controls. Binggeli increased her team-high point total to 15 with two goals and an assist.
Kate Gavin (Pasadena, MD) picked up the win in net for the Lady Crusaders with eight saves while Knights freshman goalie Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, NY) made a game-high nine saves.
St. Andrews will host nationally ranked Adelphi on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. The Abbey are off until Sunday, March 12 when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College at 2:00 p.m.
