Belderes and women's lax earns first win, 10-9

CLINTON, SC—Goals by junior defender Tenille Inman (Washington, D.C.) and freshman midfielder Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, NY) in a 57-second span gave the St. Andrews women’s lacrosse team their first victory of the 2006 campaign as the Knights escaped Presbyterian College with a 10-9 victory on Tuesday afternoon. 

The win, which was the first ‘W’ for first year head coach Stephen Belderes, improved St. Andrews to 1-1 on the year, while the Lady Blue Hose dropped to 0-4.

The Lady Blue Hose jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind an unassisted goal by freshman attacker Sally Maple (Peachtree City, GA) at 27:18 and then Maple fed freshman midfielder Trista Sturdivant (Street, MD) for a tally at 21:35. The Knights scored three straight to take a 3-2 advantage at 9:36 as midfielders Corey Whitback (Newark, NY) and Farran Sanders (Hickory, NC) and Binggeli each scored for St. Andrews in the 3-0 run.  Sturdivant picked up an unassisted goal to tie the game at 3-3 for halftime.
 
In the second half, the two teams traded goals back-and-forth as the game was tied five times. PC held a 7-5 lead at 16:00 before St. Andrews’ freshman defender Jitase Hall (New York, NY) had back-to-back goals to knot the game once again at 7-7. The Lady Blue Hose’s last lead was 9-8 at 4:31 as Maple converted on a free position shot.

Leading the Knight offense was Binggeli with the hat trick and a pair of assists, while Hall, Whitback, and Sanders each chipped in two goals. Whitback, Inman, and junior defender Meghan McAuliffe (Poway, CA) each scooped up three ground balls.
 
Maple led PC with four goals and one assist, while Sturdivant finished with three tallies. Also scoring for the Lady Blue Hose was junior attacker Kelly Sisson (Greenville, SC) who had a pair of goals. Maple registered four draw controls.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, NY) had 12 stops for St. Andrews, including seven in the second half. McCaffrey, who earns her first collegiate win, improved to 1-1 in net. PC’s freshman goalie Kira Stringer (Marietta, GA) allowed three goals in 23:42 minutes of play, while junior Ashley Baker (Lancaster, SC) finished out the game and made four saves. 

St. Andrews will host CVAC rival and No. 6 nationally ranked Limestone College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
