No. 9 Queens women's lacrosse spoils Knights opener

LAURINBURG, NC—Queens University of Charlotte, who is ranked No. 9 nationally in the IWLCA Division II Poll, scored 13 goals in the opening half in route to a 19-0 shutout of host St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women’s lacrosse on Sunday.

The Lady Royals improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the CVAC while the Knights start the ’06 season 0-1.

After five minutes of scoreless action, junior Christina Anderson started the scoring on a free-position shot at 5:02 of the first half. Kristin Sann tallied five of the Royals next nine goals helping Queens to a comfortable 13-0 lead at intermission.

Sann finished with six goals and Anderson finished just behind Sann with five (four on free-position opportunities). Both Sann and Anderson had six points on the day.

Junior Jill Durgin recorded a hat trick while supplying two helpers. Sophomore Amanda Mahle scored two goals while freshmen Shannon Janney, Brittany Weller, and Kelly Wrightson all scored one goal apiece.

Queens out shot SAPC 32-1, scooped up more ground balls (35-14), and scored on 8-of-11 free-position shots.

The Knights only shot came from freshman Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, NY). Junior Corey Whitbeck (Newark, NY) had team-highs of four ground balls and four draw controls.

Junior Royal goalkeeper Sarah Kahle (2-0) posted the complete-game shutout. St. Andrews freshman netminder Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, NY) made six saves.

The Knights travel to Clinton, SC, for a non-conference contest against Presbyterian College on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Queens visits CVAC rival and No. 8 nationally ranked Pfeiffer University on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
