Goldsboro , NC – Nationally 16th-ranked UNC Pembroke started its season with a bang this week by capturing the team championship of the second annual CenturyLink Invitational at Lane Tree Golf Club.

The Braves placed all five players in the top nine Tuesday in romping to a 21-stroke victory over runner-up Mount Olive College, which co-hosted the 36-hole event with Barton College. UNCP fired rounds of 312-320 for a 612 total and Mount Olive shot 323-330-653.

Queens University of Charlotte (331-329-660), Belmont Abbey College (348-367-715) and St. Andrews (362-386-748) rounded out the five-team field on the par-72, 5,807-yard layout.

The teams played for nearly five hours in the rain. St. Andrews sophomore Sadiyya Gillespie (83-91/174) finished sixteenth and freshman Adrienne Whitfield (86-89/175) finished tied for seventeenth among the women competitors. Rounding out the St. Andrews scoring was Morgan Clay (92-93/185) and Christina Agosto (101-113/214) who battled the inclement weather.

Mount Olive ’s Valentina Urquiola seized medalist honors with back-to-back rounds of 75 for a total of 6-over 150. Teammate Emelie Andersson took second at 75-78-153.

However, it was UNCP’s balanced attack that netted the title. Dana Watkins took third at 80-77-157, Meghan Moore was fourth at 78-80-158, Shauna Walor nabbed sixth at 75-84-159, Kelly Sumner was seventh at 79-81-160 and Lizzie Bundy fired 80-82-162 for ninth place.

Belmont Abbey’s Rebecca Mirovich claimed fourth place at 76-82-158 in the 28-player field.

Barton freshman Maria Tirado ( Zaragoza, Spain) had Tuesday’s second-best round of 4-over 76. Only four players broke 80 on Tuesday.

The Knight’s golf teams will make their next appearance at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate co-hosted by Lenoir Rhyne and Lincoln Memorial University on the Byrd and courses at the Sea Trail in Sunset Beach, North Carolina on October 3-4, 2011.
