Young St. Andrews Women Start Season

By: Lisa Becka, Men's and Women's Golf Coach

Sevierville, TN— A young St. Andrews women’s golf lineup scored a 417 Monday to land squarely in ninth place after the first round of the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate hosted by Carson Newman on the Highlands Course at the Sevierville Golf Club.

The 5811-yard par-71 layout proved to be challenging to the 56-player field with only ten players breaking 80. West Florida’s Camila Sevillano fired 76 to enjoy a two-shot lead over five players who shot 78 on a track that includes six par-3 holes. NAIA Shorter University and Carson Newman University lead the field with team totals of 315 (+31).

St. Andrews sophomore Sadiyya Gillespie of Lindenwood, N.J., led the Knights, who were opening their eason, with a round of 86. “I finished with two big numbers and killed my round. Other than that it was a steady walk with slick green conditions,” commented Gillespie. Three freshmen teed it up in their first collegiate event for SAPC, including Adrienne Whitfield of Lexington, North Carolina (97); Morgan Clay of Grand Rapids, Michigan (105); and Christina Agosto of Mesa, Arizona (129).

“With six par-3 holes on the golf course the yardage for par-4’s was adversely affected, making it extremely difficult for some of the girls to carry hazardous areas to the fairways, or to even reach the greens with their second shots,” fifth-year head coach Lisa Becka said. “We just need to keep our spirits up, keep our composure and do the best we can tomorrow. We have a very young team, so this is a learning experience every step of the way.”

An 8:30 A.M. shotgun start begins final round play tomorrow.
