CLEMMONS, N.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s golf team accomplished several individual and group goals at the 2010 Conference Carolinas Championships hosted by Belmont Abbey College at Tanglewood Park last week.
The Lady Knights recorded several individual low rounds of the season while also posting the best 18-hole team score of the year on Monday. St. Andrews finished in eighth place with a 54-hole score of 408-380-392—1180.
“Two best individual scores, one well struck round of golf, one incredibly hard worker and the best team score of the year! Can I ask for more?” said SAPC head coach Lisa Becka. “These gals are hard workers on the course and in the classroom.”
Freshman Michelle Zomers (Eganville, Canada) led the Lady Knights with a three-round total of 270. Zomers bounced back from an opening 99 with rounds of 86 and 85. Several three-putts cost Zomers her first collegiate competitive round in the 70’s.
Zomers led the Lady Knights in scoring average in her rookie campaign and was recognized for her strong play with Conference Carolinas Third-Team All-Conference distinction at the awards banquet Monday night. Zomers posted competitive rounds in the 80’s in 11-of-21 tournament rounds in 2009/10.
Junior Mariann Stark (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished one stroke behind Zomers with a 94-89-88—271. Stark’s final two rounds in the 80’s were her first times breaking the 90 shot barrier in her collegiate career. Classmate Amy Driggers (Wallace, S.C.) led the Lady Knights after the first round but struggled over the final two days finishing with a 90-98-101—289.
Freshman Alana Alves (Clemmons, N.C.) rounded out play for St. Andrews with a 125-107-118-350. Alves, who has only been playing golf for a couple years, had her best competitive scorecard in the middle round.
