The trio battled delays and inclement weather on Monday but persevered by gaining experience in tough conditions.
Zomers fired rounds of 83 and 84 at the Meadowlands Golf Club to finish tied for 34th out of 71 golfers with a season-best total of 167. Zomers opening round 11-over par 83 in the rainy conditions was her lowest collegiate competitive round and the lowest scorecard turned in by a Lady Knights golfer this season.
“The ladies were amazingly resilient to Mother Nature’s temper,” said Lorna Miedema, SAPC third year assistant coach. “Only the ducks enjoyed the wet weather. Michelle [Zomers] managed to ignore the pounding rain with a smile and her best to date score. She is on the verge of breaking into the 70’s with all her hard work paying off.”
Zomers has led the Royal Blue & White in two of her first three collegiate tournaments. Zomers has a team-best 86.8 stroke average.
The junior tandem of Amy Driggers (Wallace, S.C.) and Mariann Stark (Virginia Beach, Va.) rounded out play for the Lady Knights. Driggers tallied rounds of 94 and 95 while Stark posted scores of 103 and 99.
“Miss Amy’s umbrella -- same size as she is -- was not easy to manage but with good weather she and Mariann will be superstars,” stated Miedema.
The St. Andrews women’s golf team concludes the fall portion of its season on Monday & Tuesday, October 12-13 at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational hosted by Catawba College at the Salisbury Country Club.
