Lady Knights host Spring Invitational at Woodlake

VASS, N.C.—Junior Brittany Beltran, who fired a two-day total of five-over par 149 to win the individual medalist honors, helped guide the Pfeiffer University women’s golf team to the team title at the 2008 St. Andrews Spring Invitational at Woodlake Resort & Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday.

The Lady Falcons won the team title by 33 strokes with a 36-hole total of 639. Pfeiffer’s top-four scorers all finished in the top-10 en route to the victory. Saint Leo University and Newberry College tied for second place out of 11 teams with team totals of 672.

Beltran, who is the reigning Conference Carolinas women’s Golfer of the Month for February, won the individual title by five strokes by turning in a two-day total of five-over 149. Beltran fired a one-over 73 on the 5,943-yard, par-72 Palmer Layout at the Woodlake Resort to take the overnight lead. Beltran then backed up her impressive round with a 76 on Tuesday.

Saint Leo sophomore Anna Riss -- who shot the second best round of the tournament with a 74 on Monday -- tied for second with Newberry sophomore Franziska Blum. Both Riss and Blum totaled 154 strokes while both of their teams tied for second. Blum had the low round on Tuesday with a three-over 75 while fighting the wet and windy weather conditions.

Newberry senior Ashley Ratliff and Pfeiffer junior Molly Tullar rounded out the top-five individuals in the 62-entrant field with totals of 155 (75-80) and 160 (84-76), respectively. Limestone’s Katie Clayton (83-79—162) was sixth; Pfeiffer’s Charlene Reid (83-81—164) and Anderson’s Sophie Dembroski (80-84—164) tied for seventh; Louisburg individual Misti Joseph (85-80—165) garnered ninth; and UNC Pembroke’s Christina Crovetti (84-82—166) and Pfeiffer’s Lina Elmsater (87-79—166) rounded out the top-10 tied for 10th overall.

Host St. Andrews Presbyterian College had three individuals compete in the tournament with senior Laura Correia (Centerville, Mass.) leading the way with a 99-87—186. Senior Sally McDaniel (Stanley, N.C.) followed with a 97-96—193 while freshman Mariann Stark (Virginia Beach, Va.) rounded out the Lady Knights results with a 109-101—210. All three SAPC players improved on their first round scores in the much more difficult weather conditions in the final round.

Conference Carolinas members Limestone College (692) and Anderson University (697) finished fourth and fifth. The University of Montreal (702) placed sixth; Mount Olive College (706) placed seventh; one stroke ahead of eighth place The Citadel (707); while UNC Pembroke (736), St. Mary’s College (742), and Hollins University (923) rounded out the competition in ninth to 11th place, respectively.

The St. Andrews women’s golf team next competes in the University of Cincinnati Spring Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 28-29 at the Plantation Inn Golf Club in Crystal River, Florida.
