Queens women win St. Andrews Spring Invite

VASS, N.C.—The Queens University of Charlotte women’s golf team rallied past overnight leaders Northwood University (Mich.) and Mount Olive College on Tuesday to win the Fourth Annual St. Andrews Spring Invitational at the Woodlake Resort & Golf Club.

Queens improved its scorecard by 10 strokes in Tuesday’s final round to win the team title by one stroke with a 36-hole total of 355-345=700. Northwood was the runner-up with a 352-349=701 while Mount Olive placed third with a 352-356=708.

Anderson University jumped over the University of Findlay to take fourth place with the low 18-hole total of the tournament. AU battled back from an opening 371 with a 338 on Tuesday to finish one stroke behind Mount Olive in fourth with a total of 709. Findlay took fifth with a 370-355=725. Host St. Andrews maintained sixth place with a 381-366=747 and Presbyterian College completed team play with a 398-400=798.

Jamie Long (Northwood) won the individual medalist honors by three strokes after firing the only round in the 70’s in the whole field for either day. Long posted a six-over 78 on Tuesday on the 5,820-yard, par-72 Palmer Course layout. Long’s two-day total of 82-78=160 was three strokes clear of runner-up Kristin Moberg of Mount Olive, who finished with a 81-82=163. Sophie Dembroski (Anderson) took the third place carding an 87-80-167. Hilary Armel led the victorious Royals of Queens in fourth signing over an 86-85=171.

Sophomore Alessandra Maurtua led St. Andrews with rounds of 87 and 85. Maurtua’s two-day total of 172 was good for a tie for fifth place out of 38 golfers. Senior Andrea Johnston battled back from an opening 94 with a team-low 84 on Tuesday. Johnston finished tied for 12th with a total of 178. Other Lady Knights golfers included junior Sally McDaniel (103-93=196), junior Laura Correia (97-104=201), and freshman Jessica Greenway (116-106=222).
