Maurtua paces St. Andrews women's golf at Kiawah Island

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s golf team opened up the Spring 2007 portion of their schedule at the Tusculum College/Kiawah Island Women's Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday at Cougar Point Golf Course finishing 15th out of 18 teams.

Sophomore Alessandra Maurtua (Lima, Peru) led the Lady Knights with a 25th place in the 88-player field. Maurtua signed scorecards of 83 and 80 on the 5,850-yard par-72 Cougar Point Golf Course.

Maurtua’s two-day total of 163 helped St. Andrews finish 15th with a 36-hole total of 752. The Knights moved up one spot after the first day by improving 14 strokes off their team total during Sunday’s finale.

Senior captain Andrea Johnston (Chapel Hill, N.C.) helped SAPC the most on the second day by shaving 13 swings off her first round. After posting a 93 on Saturday, Johnston fired back with an eight-over 80 to finish in 50th place with a total of 173.

Freshman Jessica Greenway (Laurinburg, N.C.) turned in rounds of 102 and 101 to finish 77th with a 36-hole total of 203. Junior Sally McDaniel (Stanley, N.C.) concluded the Lady Knights scoring with a 105-108-213.

Third-ranked Rollins College shot a final round 290 and won the team title on a playoff. The Tars finished with 306-290=596, tying top-ranked Florida Southern College (305-291=596). The tournament title was decided on a tie-breaker using the lowest score of each team's fifth player.

Rollins' Marie-Pierre Bernier won medalist honors as she fired a final round five-under par 67 to shoot 75-67=142 (-2), edging out Kim Ulander of Florida Southern, who posted 74-69=143 (-1) on Sunday.

St. Andrews will next compete at the Lady Falcon Invitational (hosted by Pfeiffer University) on Monday and Tuesday, February 19-20 at the Old North State Club in Badin Lake, N.C.
