Maurtua paces Lady Knights to record setting trip to Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn.—Sophomore Alessandra Maurtua (Lima, Peru) lost the individual medalist honors on a scorecard playoff en route to helping the St. Andrews women’s golf team finish sixth out of nine teams at the Tusculum Fall Classic at the Link Hills Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.

After opening with a four-over par 76, Maurtua fired an even-par 72 in Tuesday’s finale to finish tied for first with a 148 (+4) total. Maurtua’s 72 on the 5,804-yard, par-72 layout is a new school record in the programs four-year history.

Host Tusculum won the team title by five strokes over Catawba with a 36-hole score of 630. Shannon Palenkas led the Lady Pioneers to the victory after claiming the medalist honors on the scorecard playoff against Maurtua. Palenkas posted a 71-77=148.

St. Andrews finished sixth out of nine teams with a 353-334=687. The Knights set program-records for both 18-hole (334) and 36-hole (687) team totals.

Senior Andrea Johnston (Chapel Hill, N.C.) improved by nine strokes in the second round to finish tied for 21st out of 47 golfers with an 89-80=169. Johnston’s eight-over 80 was a season-low.

Junior Laura Correia (Centerville, Mass.) carded her first rounds in the 80’s for the Lady Knights finishing 28th with an 89-85=174. Freshman Jessica Greenway (Laurinburg, N.C.) concluded SAPC scoring with a 99-97=196.

The Lady Knights next travel to the Lenoir-Rhyne/Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate at the River Hills Golf & Country Club in Little River, S.C. on October 9-10.
