HARTSVILLE, SC—Freshman Alessandra Maurtua (Lima, Peru), who was named to the All-CVAC first team, backed up her award with a sixth place finish in the 2006 CVAC Women’s Golf Championships at the Hartsville Country Club (hosted by Coker College) to lead two St. Andrews individuals.
Maurtua carded rounds of 84, 76 and 80 on the 5,708-yard, par-72 Hartsville Country Club layout. Maurtua’s 54-hole total of 240 was good for sixth place out of 32 golfers and an All-Tournament selection. Mautua’s four-over par 76 on Friday was a collegiate-low tournament round for the freshman.
Maurtua has four top-10 finishes in the first six collegiate tournaments and has a 82.75 scoring average.
Sophomore Sally McDaniel (Stanley, NC) completed the Knights play with scorecards that improved drastically each day. McDaniel followed an opening 106 with rounds of 99 and 91.
Maurtua and McDaniel look to be the base of a very-young but drastically improved Knights squad for the 2006-2007 season.
Britany Beltran won the individual medalist honors with a 77-72-76=225 to lead the team champs, Pfeiffer University (936), to an 85-stroke victory over Anderson University (1021).
