GAFFNEY, SC—Freshman Alessandra Maurtua (Lima, Peru) won the 2006 Upstate College Classic at the Cherokee National Golf Club as an individual for St. Andrews Presbyterian College, capturing her first medalist honors in only her third collegiate women’s golf tournament on Monday and Tuesday, March 6-7.
Maurtua fired the only round in the 70’s of the tournament on Monday with a five-over 77 on the first day’s 6,190-yard, par-72 layout. Maurtua backed up her solid play with the low-round of Tuesday with an eight-over 80 on the 6,285-yard, par-27 course.
Maurtua’s two day total of 157 was good for an eight-stroke victory over Gretchen McLeod of Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Maurtua set SAPC career lows for both 18 holes (77) and 36 holes (157).
Sophomore Sally McDaniel (Stanley, NC) also competed as an individual for the Knights, carding a 97 and 105 for a 36-hole total of 202.
Anderson University (356-351-707) won the team title over the host Saints (359-351-710) by three strokes.
The Knights will team compete in the 2006 St. Andrews Spring Invitational at the Woodlake Country Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina, on Monday and Tuesday, March 20-21.
