January 24, 2005

LAURINBURG, NC--The St. Andrews men’s and women’s golf programs look to build on an average fall season and plan on being very competitive in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC) this spring.

The St. Andrews men’s team was picked sixth in the 2005 CVAC Pre-Season Poll as voted upon by the leagues coaches after having an up-and-down fall season. The Knights, who finished sixth in the 2004 CVAC Tournament and fourth in the Atlantic Regional, were picked behind Coker, Barton, Pfeiffer, Belmont Abbey and Queens.

The Knights started the year off with a disappointing eighth place showing in the Anderson Invitational but bounced back with a good appearance in the Johnny Palmer Invitational. St. Andrews finished in the top-half of a very difficult field including ahead of CVAC rivals Queens, Barton, Anderson, Mount Olive and Lees-McRae.

The highlight of the fall came in late September when the Knights hosted the St. Andrews Fall Invitational at the Deercroft Golf Club. SAPC won the 12-team tournament with a 15-over par 303.

First year head coach Josh Nahm, who played his collegiate golf at St. Andrews, will guide a young but talented group of 12 gentlemen. 2004 CVAC Freshman of the Year, Alvin Yeung, looks to improve on his team low 77.0 fall stroke average while seniors Josh Boucher and Jon Hermanson look to go out with a bang. Graham Bell, Cory Fleck, John Kolls, Matt Wilson and Nathan Young all played in multiple tournaments for the Knights in the fall.

The St. Andrews women’s golf team, who are picked sixth in the 2005 CVAC Pre-Season Coaches Poll, will look to build on last year’s inaugural season. The Knights have already beaten last year’s low one-day team total by 85 strokes this fall.

The Knights return two players in Andrea Johnston and Kristen Bowling. Johnson made last years CVAC All-Conference Second Team. Nahm added four new players including Heather Pothier, Tara Laird, Sally McDaniel and Cara Daily. Pothier holds SAPC’s individual low tournament round with a 77.

Lady Indians Golfers Win SAPC Fall Invite; SAPC 3rd

September 27, 2004

WAGRAM, NC—With a team score of 329, the Newberry College women’s golf team was crowned the winners of the 2004 St. Andrews Fall Invitational at the Deercroft Golf & Country Club. The tournament was shortened to 18 holes because of expected bad weather from Tropical Storm Jeanne.

Mt. Olive finished in second place with a team score of 367. SAPC shot its best team score in their two-year history (393) to come in third place.

Stephanie Hemann led the Lady Indians to victory with her seven-over-par 79 on the 5,826-yard par-72 course. Hemann held off the Knights Heather Pothier by two-strokes for medallist honors. Eva Cormann (NC) and Lindsey Snyder (MOC) tied for third with 83’s. Aubrey Mosley finished four stokes back in fifth place.

The Knights Andrea Johnston came in a tie for sixth place with Newberry’s Linsay Gifford carding 85’s. Other Knights scores included Sally McDaniel (113), Tara Laird (114), Cara Daily (124) and Kristen Bowling (133).

“I am disappointed that we could not play both rounds of the tournament but under the circumstances I believe the tournament was a success,” said SAPC Head Coach Josh Nahm. “I was very happy with every teams willingness to get one day in because without their support the tournament could not have been successful.”

“It was hard to know what to expect today but I saw six girls out there that never gave up and provided the best team score in the history of the program,” continued Nahm. “Heather Pothier is one of the hardest working players on the team. Her improvement over the last month is a result of the time and effort she has put into her golf game. I am very proud of how Andrea Johnston played today. She had been struggling with her swing but she fought through it today and except for a little trouble on the last hole could have been in contention to win the individual title.”

The Knights will travel to Charlotte, NC for the Top Flite/Rafferty’s Intercollegiate hosted by Queens this weekend, October 3-4.
