Lisa Becka
Head Coach

 

Lisa Becka is starting her fifth season as the head coach of the men’s and women’s golf programs at St. Andrews Presbyterian College after being hired in August of 2007.

In her first season at St. Andrews, Becka helped stabilize the Knights golf programs in the process of rebuilding the squads into conference and regional contenders. Becka successfully managed the 2008 St. Andrews Spring Invitational at Woodlake Resort & Golf Club while increasing the size of the field from prior years. Becka coached one All-Conference golfer on both the men’s and women’s teams. Becka also coached one men’s individual qualifier for the 2008 Atlantic Regional.

Since her first season, Becka has added several more golfers to the list of All-Conference players over the years. Her coaching has also led some of her players to first place individual finishes and multiple top ten individual finishes. The golf program has hosted the St. Andrews Spring Invitational consistently for the past four years, as well as hosting other events throughout Becka’s time as Head Coach of the program.

Becka came to SAPC after selling her family owned and operated 18-hole public golf facility in Columbiana, Ohio named Copeland Hills Golf Club. As a youngster Lisa grew up on the golf course and eventually became the Director of Golf & LPGA Class-A Teaching Professional. During her time at Copeland, Becka directed and managed every aspect of the business operation. With a passion for education she developed several learning programs for men, women and children including Business Links, Ladies Links, Senior Stretch, and Just Fore Juniors – a junior golf program. She also was the program director for one of the nationally recognized LPGA-USGA Junior Girls Golf Clubs in Columbiana. She focused on teaching kids the game of golf while helping the high school talent find collegiate scholarships and academic opportunities.

Active in her community, Becka taught the physical education class Beginning Golf at Kent State University in Salem, Ohio. While at Kent State, she helped numerous administrators of local high school sports programs with their fund raising efforts in using golf as a vehicle to drive community support. Becka has taught beginners the basics, as well as trained high school and collegiate golfers.

She has instructed professional players including LPGA Tour Member Marianne Morris, a University of South Carolina graduate. Morris’s accolades include a 1996 16th place finish on the LPGA Tour’s money list, a third place finish at the 1996 LPGA Championship, a second place finish at the 1997 LPGA Jamie Farr Kroger Classic, and also has 14 US Women’s Opens to her credit.

Becka also boasts an accomplished playing career at the collegiate level. Becka was a four-year member of the University of Central Florida golf team, winning the Lady Sunshine Invitational at Riviera Country Club as a Lady Knight. Becka played another eight years as a professional golfer including stints on the Futures Tour, Gold Coast Tour, Central Florida Challenge Mini-Tour, and on sponsor’s exemptions on the LPGA Tour.

Becka has a golf philosophy that fits well at St. Andrews bringing an incredibly positive attitude with a talent for recruiting and developing leaders with an equal desire to excel.

The Columbiana, Ohio, native graduated from Central Florida with a Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal studies in 1989. Becka is an LPGA Class-A Teaching Professional with education credits from an abundant amount of golf schools, workshops, programs, and seminars. She is also a general aviation enthusiast who holds an FAA Private Pilot’s certificate for Airplane Single and Multi-Engine land.

 
 

 

Lorna Miedema
Assistant Coach

 

Lorna Miedema is entering her fifth season as the assistant coach of both the men’s and women’s golf teams at St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

In her time at St. Andrews, she has helped coach several All-Conference golfers on both the men’s and women’s teams and coached one men’s individual qualifier for the 2008 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.

A native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Miedema is a member of both the LPGA T&CP and the CPGA tour division. She is passionate about the game both as a player and as a coach. She credits her passion for golf to her long time golf coach “Herbie” Triplett and his amazing wife Hilo. As a result of his influence, Coach Miedema has one goal while at St. Andrews; bring out the best in each student athlete with consideration and appreciation of where they came from, where they are and where they want to go.

Previously a teaching professional at a national recognized LPGA-USGA Junior Girls Golf Clubs at Copeland Hills Golf Club in Ohio; she competed on several golf tours, including the CN Canadian Women’s tour; winning the 2005 Canadian National Professional Golf Association championship; started and operated a car rental company in Orlando and managed to complete law school at night. Through her work experience, travels and life experiences she has recognized that teaching and coaching are where she is best suited.

Coach Miedema explains that “everyone has their own individual style, as a coach and teacher it is my job to adapt and help them achieve their goals”. Her additional duties at St. Andrews include teaching upperclassman Sports Law and Risk Management in preparation for their experience outside of St. Andrews. When there is any extra time she can be found practicing her golf game for the occasional LPGA T&CP tournament or designing a new training aid.

Coach Miedema attended Syracuse University Newhouse School of Communications in Syracuse, New York; received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Communication and Telecommunications with a minor in Marketing from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana; and a Juris Doctorate from Barry University School of Law in Orlando, Florida.
