Women's 5k results
CHARLESTON, S.C.—Freshman Desiree Cavazos (Fayetteville, N.C.) and sophomore Bonnie MacDonald (Carthage, N.C.) both ran personal records (PR) at the 2007 Hagan Stone Park Cross Country Classic to lead St. Andrews to a third place finish out of 15 teams in the women’s 5k race on Saturday morning.
Junior Alyson Trovato (Cedar Park, Texas) once again led the Lady Knights harriers to a high finish with an impressive race. Trovato finished the 5,000-meter course at the Hagan Stone Park in just 19 minutes and 41 seconds to finish for her third straight top-10 finish. Trovato place eighth overall out of 136 entrants and third out of non-Division I competitors.
St. Andrews , ranked No. 6 in the Southeast Region, finished in third place out of 15 teams with 101 points and just 28 points behind the champion. The Lady Knights were the top NCAA Division II College in the field finishing just behind a pair of NAIA schools.
Senior Veronica Gobeyn (Mullins, S.C.) and freshman Marie Hibbard (Statesville, N.C.) both recorded top-20 finishes for the Knights finishing just seven seconds apart. Gobeyn earned 15th place with a time of 21:07 and Hibbard was 16th at 21:14.
Cavazos shaved seven seconds off her 5k PR to also finish in the top-20. Cavazos’ time of 21:37 was good for 19th overall.
MacDonald made the biggest improvement by setting a new PR by 14 seconds. MacDonald was SAPC’s fifth scoring runner by blazing the trails in 23:49.
Freshman Danielle Martin (Newport, N.C.) concluded the Knights running in 24:51.
St. Andrews has two weeks to prepare for the 2007 Conference Carolinas Championships on Saturday, October 20. The women’s 5k race to crown a conference champion will start at 8:30 a.m. at the Roger Milliken Research Park (hosted by Converse College) in Spartanburg, S.C.
