Women's 5k results
CHARLESTON, S.C.—Junior Alyson Trovato (Cedar Park, Texas) and freshman Marie Hibbard (Statesville, N.C.) each scored a personal record (PR) in a 5k race to lead a depleted St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s cross country team to a third place finish out of 11 colleges in The Citadel Invitational at James Island County Park on Saturday morning.
Trovato’s time of 19 minutes and 12 seconds was the fastest 5,000-meter time by a Lady Knights harrier since 2005. Trovato, who took 24 seconds off her PR, finished second out of 89 non-Division I runners and more impressively fourth overall out of 141 total entrants that includes DI participants.
Senior Veronica Gobeyn (Mullins, S.C.) posted her first top-10 finish of the season finishing 10th overall for St. Andrews. Gobeyn, who took a full minute off her first 5k race time of the season, crossed the finish line in 20:12.
Hibbard also had a PR for the Lady Knights in only her second collegiate 5k race. Hibbard stopped the clock in 21:09 for a top-20 result at 20th overall.
SAPC entered the race with only five runners, who would all have to score for the Knights. St. Andrews still posted an impressive third place finish out of 11 colleges even with a young lineup that had three freshmen competing.
The freshmen duo of Desiree Cavazos (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Danielle Martin (Newport, N.C.) rounded out the Knights results. Cavazos finished in 21:55 and Martin concluded at 24:32.
St. Andrews participates in the Hagan Stone Cross Country Classic in Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday, October 6 with the women starting at 10:15 a.m.
