Lady Knights cross country runs strong at Eye Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C.—Junior Alyson Trovato (Cedar Park, Texas) was the top Conference Carolinas runner, helping pace St. Andrews Presbyterian College to a seventh place finish in the women’s collegiate 5K race at the 2007 Eye Opener Cross Country Meet at the Roger Milliken Research Park on Saturday morning.

Trovato finished 12th overall out of 165 NCAA Division II harriers to lead the Lady Knights. Trovato was the only endurance runner out of nine Conference Carolinas teams to break the 20-minute mark with a time of 19:36. Trovato was also the third fastest finisher out of Southeast Region entrants.

In the team competition, St. Andrews finished seventh out of 22 colleges with 232 points and only 24 points out of a top-five finish in the deep field. SAPC, ranked sixth in the Southeast Region, finished exactly in sixth place out of regional schools. The Lady Knights top four runners all finished in the upper third of the field.

Senior Veronica Gobeyn (Mullins, S.C.) and freshman Marie Hibbard (Statesville, N.C.) posted strong finishes for SAPC finishing within two spots of each other. Gobeyn’s time of 21 minutes and 12 seconds was good for a 36th place result. Hibbard, in her first collegiate race, was just five seconds behind in 38th place crossing the finish line in 21:17.

Freshman Desiree Cavazos (Fayetteville, N.C.) also logged a quality performance in her first collegiate race concluding the 3.1 mile course in 21:45, which was good for a 53rd place outcome..

Sophomore Bonnie MacDonald (Carthage, N.C.) rounded out the Lady Knights top five scoring runners with a speed of 24:04. Freshman Danielle Martin (Newport, N.C.) was just 14 seconds behind MacDonald at 24:18. Sophomore Lauren Crabb (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and freshman Amelia Shill (Moore, S.C.) concluded the Knights running at 24:55 and 30:06, respectively.

St. Andrews will next compete in the 2007 Wingate University Invitational on Saturday, September 15. The women’s 6,000-kilometer race begins at 9:15 a.m.
