WINGATE, N.C.—Sophomore Mitch Cooper (Virginia Beach, Va.) won his first collegiate individual title to pace the St. Andrews men’s cross country team into first at the 2006 Wingate Invitational on Saturday. Sophomore Alyson Trovato (Cedar Park, Texas) was the top CVAC female runner to lead the Lady Knights to a runner-up showing following the men’s race.
The St. Andrews men’s team, ranked No. 2 in the Southeast Region, won the team title with 37 points. CVAC rival Anderson finished 31 points behind the Knights in second out of 15 teams.
Cooper won the long 10,000-meter race with a time of 33:50, finishing three seconds ahead of freshman teammate Pedro Tapia, Jr. (Sanford, N.C.). Tapia’s second place result was his second consecutive top-three in his rookie season. Freshman Ryan Janes (Gaithersburg, Md.) posted a fourth place finish with a time of 34:21 in his first collegiate 10k race. Senior Tim Bourke (Alden, N.Y.) also finished in the top-10 for SAPC, crossing the finish line in seventh at 34:42. Junior Adam Vick (Salisbury, N.C.) rounded out the Knights top-five team scoring runners with a 26th place finish out of 110 runners with a time of 36:35.
Sophomore Perry Morris (Austin, Texas) clocked in at 37:51; Freshman James Lloyd (Lusby, Md.) finished at 40:50; and junior Patrick Hogan (Denton, N.C.) concluded the men’s running at 42:23.
The Lady Knights, who are also ranked at No. 5 in the women’s Southeast Region, continued their hot start with a second place finish out of 16 teams with 107 points. North Carolina Central won the women’s team title while SAPC finished ahead of all five other CVAC schools entered.
Trovato led the Lady Knights assault of the 6,000-meter course with her first top-10 finish at St. Andrews. Trovato finished at 25 minutes flat and ahead of all conference opposition. Finish in 17th and 18th place, respectively, were sophomore Leah Nicholson (Hendersonville, N.C.) and Veronica Gobeyn (Mullins, S.C.). Nicholson crossed the finish line at 25:48 while Gobeyn stepped across eight seconds later.
Freshman Rachael Ambrosia (San Jose, Calif.) was 32nd out of 112-entrants with a time of 26:42 and classmate Heather Woodard (Hampton, Va.) rounded out the top-five scoring Knights in 36th at 26:57.
Junior Tessa Franz (Warren, Ore.) clocked her first 6k race in 28:13; freshman Bonnie MacDonald (Carthage, N.C.) followed at 29:15; freshman Lauren Crabb (Kalamazoo, Mich.) posted 34:55; sophomore India Hill (Somerset, Va.) timed in at 35:47; and junior Jordan Copp (Overland Park, Kan.) concluded the SAPC day at 37:10.
The Knights harriers take a week off before heading to Greensboro, N.C. for the Hagan Stone Classic on Saturday, September 30th.
