LAURINBURG, N.C.—After opening up the 2006 season with impressive finishes at the Eye Opener Meet in Spartanburg, S.C. this past weekend, both St. Andrews Presbyterian College cross country teams have gained regional acclaim in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II polls.
The Knights men’s harriers finished second out of 22 teams in the Eye Opener on Saturday to maintain their preseason USTFCCA No. 2 ranking in the Southeast Region. St. Andrews had four runners place in the top-eight out of a 172-entrant field in the challenging 8k endurance race.
The Lady Knights, who were picked ninth in the CVAC Preseason Coaches Poll, surprised the field at the Eye Opener with a fifth place finish out of 24 teams. St. Andrews finished third out of 11 CVAC schools helping earn a No. 5 ranking in this week’s USTFCCA Southeast Poll.
In their fifth year coaching the Knights cross country programs, head coach Gary Aycock and assistant Jim Walters added four freshmen to strengthen a men’s team that qualified for the national championships in 2005 and added seven newcomers from last years women’s squad to field two very competitive teams.
