David Johnson enters his third season as the head coach of the St. Andrews women’s basketball program.
Johnson was promoted from assistant to head coach of the St. Andrews women's basketball program in 2004. Johnson spent his first season at SAPC as an assistant for the men's basketball team before moving over to the women in ‘04.
Last year, Johnson led the Lady Knights to a 12-16 overall mark and a 9-11 finish in the CVAC. Johnson helped the SAPC win a first-round game in the CVAC Tournament at as the No. 7 seed. Johnson has coached an All-Conference selection in each of his two years.
In his first season at St. Andrews, Johnson led the Knights to a 15-13 record. It marked the first time that St. Andrews finished a season with a winning record since joining the NCAA Division II ranks in 1995. Johnson led SAPC to a 10-10 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference record and a No. 5 seed in the 2005 CVAC Tournament.
Johnson began his coaching career at Marlboro County High School in Bennettsville, SC. He spent three seasons as the girls head coach. During his tenure there Johnson revived a dormant girls program. He also coached in the Hawaii Basketball Classic in 2001.
As an assistant in the 2003/2004 season, Johnson helped guide the Knights to their previous best overall and conference win totals and also helped coach St. Andrews to their first ever postseason game in 2004.
A native of Marlboro County, he is a 1998 graduate of Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., where he earned a Bachelor of Science in secondary education. Johnson earned his Masters in General Education from Capella University in December of 2004.
Coach Johnson and his wife, Johnnerlyn, reside in Laurinburg with their three children Daniel, D'averia, and Davviney. He also has another daughter, Cecilia, who lives in South Carolina.
