Knights eliminated in quarterfinals of CVAC tourney

WILSON, NCThe second-seeded Barton College women’s basketball team blew open a close game with 57 second-half points Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament. The result was an 89-65 conquest of No. 7 seed St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

The 22-6 Lady Bulldogs, ranked seventh in the East Region, will play No. 3 seed Erskine at 4 p.m. Friday in the tourney semifinals at Mount Olive.

Kim Butts notched 15 points, Joe Denevan and Anjessa Evans canned 14 apiece and Candice Britton tallied 13 to pace the victors, who only led 32-30 at intermission.

For the Knights (12-16), guard Karen Foggie (Charlotte, NC) was unstoppable, swishing a game-high 29 points on 13-of-20 shooting. Marquita Prichard (Havelock, NC) scored 11 and Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.) added 10 points, six assists and two steals.

Barton held a scant 52-51 lead with just over 11 minutes left, but the Lady Bulldogs went a 25-4 run to put the game away. Britton sparked the rally with seven straight points.

Barton dominated the backboards 51-37 and outscored SAPC 19-2 on second-chance points.
