LAURINBURG, NC—No. 7 seed St. Andrews Presbyterian College overcame a 16-point deficit and defeated No. 10 seed Queens University of Charlotte, 71-60, in the First Round of the 2006 CVAC Women’s Basketball Tournament on Monday in Harris Court.
The Knights, who improved to 12-15 overall, will visit No. 2 seed Barton College (in Wilson, NC) in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
“The first tournament win in my two years as head coach means a lot to me,” said St. Andrews Head Coach David Johnson. “It shows that all the hard work that the ladies put in all season does pays off.”
The Lady Royals finish the season with a 4-24 overall mark.
Queens, who just defeated SAPC 98-84 on Saturday, continued it good play to start Monday’s game taking a 22-9 lead midway through the first half. However, the Knights out scored the Royals 17-10 in the final 10-minutes of the first half to cut the deficit to 32-26 at the intermission.
An early 9-0 run by St. Andrews propelled the Knights into a slim 39-37 lead with just under 14 minutes left in regulation. After a couple minutes of close play, back-to-back buckets by junior Marquita Prichard (Havelock, NC) provided St. Andrews with a four-point lead. The Knights maintained a single-digit advantage for the final 10 minutes.
The Knights overcame a 25.7-percent shooting first half with a 48.5% performance in the final 20 minutes. The Lady Royals controlled the boards, 54-44, but committed more turnovers, 23-15.
“We got good shots in the first half but we just didn’t make any of them,” continued Johnson. “No matter the level of play, if you don’t make shots your defense will suffer. In the locker room we talked about it and in the second half the shots started to fall. The way we battled in the second half gave us the chance to play at least one more game.”
Junior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, NC) led the Knights with 27 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Senior Tamerial Coward (La Grange, NC) scored 13 points and grabbed seven boards. Sophomore April Johnson (McColl, SC) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Foggie had a game-high four steals.
“Foggie led us defensively, which led to a great offensive performance for her,” concluded Johnson.
Carmelita Jimenez (Morgantown, WV) scored a team-high 24 points for Queens. Phylicia (Greensboro, NC) added 17 points while Jimenez finished her double-double with 10 boards.
