Lady Royals hoops defeats St. Andrews, 98-84

LAURINBURG, NCQueens University of Charlotte scored a season-high 98 points, spoiling St. Andrews Presbyterian College’s ‘Senior Day’ with a 98-84 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference road victory in women’s basketball on Saturday in Harris Court.

The Lady Royals, who snapped a six-game skid, finished the regular season with a 4-23 overall and 4-16 in the CVAC record. The Knights enter the 2006 CVAC Tournament with an 11-15 overall and 9-11 CVAC mark.

The two teams will turn around and play in the first round of the CVAC tourney. No. 7 seed St. Andrews will host No. 10 seed Queens on Monday at 5:30 p.m. SAPC won the first meeting 75-65.

The Knights two seniors; guard Crista Henderson (Prince George, VA) and forward Tamerial Coward (La Grange, NC); were honored after the game by second year head coach David Johnson.

The Lady Royals connected on six 3-pointers in the first half including three by senior Carmelita Jimenez (Morgantown, WV) to take a 46-34 lead at halftime. Jimenez bucketed 16 of her 23 points in the first half.

Queens led for the whole second half on strong shooting including 12-of-22 (54.5%) from the field and 3-for-5 (60.6%) from the arc. St. Andrews pulled to within six with full court pressure for most of the second frame, but 20 Knights fouls and the Royals converting 25-of-31 (80.6%) attempts from the charity stripe secured the win.

Senior Maggie Austin (Wilmington, NC) was perfect from the free throw line (10-for-10) in the second half to lead Queens with 25 points. Junior Shakema Etheredge (Columbia, SC) was the third Lady Royal to score 20-plus points with 23. Austin completed the double-double with 10 rebounds while Etheredge just missed one with nine assists.

Junior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, NC) led the Knights with 24 points. The two seniors had solid nights from the floor with Henderson scoring 16 and Coward adding 11. Coward had six boards while Henderson and Foggie each grabbed five.
