Lady Saints defeat Knights from FT line, 81-73

GAFFNEY, SCLimestone College sank 16 extra free throws and Melissa DeVore scorched visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College for 29 points as the hosts won the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference showdown, 81-73, on Monday at the Timken Center.

The Lady Saints, who avenged a 91-79 loss at St. Andrews on January 9, improved to 11-16 overall and 8-12 in the CVAC. The Knights fell to 11-14 and 9-10.

A cold shooting first half by SAPC, who went 10-for-36 (27.8%) from the field, allowed Limestone to take a 34-29 advantage at halftime. The Lady Saints held the largest lead of the game, 28-13, in the first half before the Knights ended the half with a 16-5 run. A senior Crista Henderson (Prince George, VA) three-pointer with seven seconds left capped the rally and closed the gap to five heading into the locker room.

Limestone maintained the lead for all 20 minutes of the second half, barely out scoring the visitors 47-44 in the second stanza. The Lady Saints converted on 18 of their 29 made free throws in the second half to complete the eight-point victory.

Both teams shot 38-percent from the field while St. Andrews held a 54-46 edge on the boards. The Knights were called for more fouls, 32-18, and committed more turnovers, 19-17.

Henderson finished with her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, NC) scored a team-high 21 points. Senior Tamerial Coward (La Grange, NC) added 14 points while junior Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.) had nine boards, seven points, three assists and two steals. Both junior Marquita Prichard (Havelock, NC) and sophomore April Johnson (McColl, SC) chipped in with eight points apiece.

DeVore completed her double-double with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Tiffany Jones scored 16; Reagan Robins tallied 14; and Monica Adams totaled 10.

St. Andrews concludes the regular season on Saturday’s ‘Senior Day’, when the Knights host CVAC rival Queens University of Charlotte at 2:00 p.m.
