Flying Fleet Outshoots Knights Basketball

Laurinburg, NC- Harris Court saw quite an exciting afternoon of women’s basketball on Saturday as St. Andrews University hosted Erskine College. The Flying Fleet traveled from Due West, SC, for today’s Conference Carolinas matchup against the Knights. All of the ladies put forth a fantastic effort, leading to a close contest. In the end, the Knights could not keep up with the hot hands of Erskine and finished the game with a 79-57 loss.

The Knights put up the first bucket of the game, starting what would be a close first half. Beneè Norton (Atlanta, GA) led the charge for SAU in the first 20:00 minutes of play. In fact, Norton put up six of the Knights’ first nine points. Kimayah Fulcher (New Bern, NC) drove to the basket to give the ‘Drew six points before the first buzzer. Brittany Roberts (Concord, NC) also helped keep the Knights in the running with the Flying Fleet. Roberts knocked down St. Andrews’ only three pointer of the first half and tied Norton with a total of eight points as the ladies headed to the locker room for halftime.

Porsha Morgan, a senior on the Flying Fleet squad, added an impressive 16 points for Erskine during the first half of the contest; followed by Elizabeth Tatum, Rosa Powell, and Adrienne Bannerman who each contributed six to the Fleet’s total. The Erskine ladies crashed the boards hard to pick up 26 rebounds in the first half alone.

Returning to the court, the Knights once again got things started when Roberts made a bank shot under the basket. Fulcher increased her point total in the latter half of the game to earn a total of 15 points, in addition to leading the team with nine rebounds. Norton contributed six more points for the Knights, while Tyler Knight (Greenville, NC) put up eight total points. The SAU ladies gave it their all and added 31 total points in the second half, compiling a total of 57.

The Flying Fleet never slowed down, nearly doubling their score in the second half. Morgan put up 12 more points for Erskine, giving her the game high of 28. Tatum added 11 more for the Fleet before time ran out in tonight’s game. Erskine went an impressive 100% from the line tonight; while the Knights earned a 71.4 free-throw percentage. Fulcher went 5-6 at the line, with Roberts shooting 80% (8-10).

The Knights will be on the road for their next tour of games. For their next contest, the ladies will play Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, NC, on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 5:30 PM.
