Spartanburg, SC- St. Andrews women’s basketball made the journey to Converse College this weekend to take on the Valkyries. After the most exciting game that SAU women’s basketball has seen this season, the Knights fell just shy of the Valkyries. The Knights maintained the lead for the first 10 minutes of the game, before battling through a back and forth game. Finishing with a final score of 86-74, the Knights were unable to top the Valkyries, but managed to get three players to score in the teens and one in the twenties.

Senior guard Rebecca Bryant (Cincinnati, OH) came out strong for the Knights’ offense and put up an outstanding 22 points for SAU. Trailing close behind Bryant, Beneè Norton (Atlanta, GA) scored 16 for the Royal Blue and White. Brittany Roberts (Concord, NC), who sunk the first three-pointer of the game, tied with Kimayah Fulcher (New Bern, NC) when they both added 14 points.

Rachel Hewitt (Kokomo, IN) led the Knights at the line by shooting 100%. Roberts made five of her eight free throws, followed by Bryant who went 60% from the foul line. The Knights not only drove in for the foul, but also crashed the boards to grab 43 rebounds. Roberts’ 11 rebounds earned her the only St. Andrews double-double of the game.

The Knights threw 16 assists this afternoon as they moved the ball around in order to find an open shot. Fulcher passed four assists with Hewitt setting up three of her teammates for a basket. The ladies outplayed the Valkyries in one area, steals. The squad worked hard to slow down Converse and put up one of the strongest defenses SAU has established so far this season. As a result, St. Andrews picked up eight steals, while the Valkyries only managed to steal the ball from the Knights one time.

For their next competition, the ladies will host the Bulldogs of Barton College on Wednesday, January 25 at 5:30 PM. Grab your seat at Harris Court on Wednesday and settle in for a night of St. Andrews basketball as the men will face the Bulldogs at 7:30 PM.
