Laurinburg, N.C.- St. Andrews’ very own women’s head basketball coach Jessica Vanco is scheduled to be inducted on May 21, 2011 by the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. Vanco was a member of the 1994 Trinity High School basketball team who won the state championship by knocking off number one ranked team, Pinkerton High School and also effectively stopped a 74 game winning streak. Trinity ended the season with a 26-2 record, and managed to go undefeated in the North Coast League for a seventh straight season, extending their NCL streak to 76 straight wins. Trinity was so dominant that they averaged wins by 50.1 points per game enroute to scoring over 100 points seven different times, including twice in the playoffs. Prestigious basketball magazine (Street and Smiths) rated Trinity third in its “Top 20 National Teams.”
“I am honored to be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in May. Being a part of my high school team, particularly the 1994 team, was an experience I will never forget.” Vanco commented on receiving the honor.
“Our coach taught us the real definition of work ethic with our early morning workouts and 4 hour practices in July. He [Coach Pat Diulus] taught us what it meant to speak with integrity, be loyal teammates, and respect the game of basketball.”
Vanco is currently in her third year of coaching the Women’s Basketball team at St. Andrews. Look for the Lady Knights upcoming season’s schedule on the St. Andrews Athletic Website.
