Lady Knights defeat Erskine on 'Senior Day'

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Senior post players Jessy Perkins (Goldsboro, N.C.) and April Johnson (McColl, S.C.) each tallied career-highs in rebounds leading the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball team to a 56-46 win against Conference Carolinas rival Erskine College during Saturday afternoon’s ‘Senior Day’ at Harris Court.

Perkins grabbed a game-high 17 boards while Johnson pulled down 16 as the Lady Knights snapped an eight-game losing streak improving to 6-20 overall and 5-14 in Conference Carolinas action. Sophomore Mary Ann Langford (LaGrange, Ga.) scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Flying Fleet, who fell to 4-21 and 3-15.

After today’s 10-point victory, St. Andrews fourth year head coach David Johnson recognized his five seniors including Perkins, Johnson, Erika Thompson (Kalamazoo, Mich.), Jackie Cromer (Greensboro, N.C.), and Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.).

Perkins and Thompson each scored 16 points for SAPC while Johnson bucketed 14 and Cromer netted six.

St. Andrews used a 9-0 run early in the game to take control of the first half. Perkins made two lay-ups to finish the first half to give the Knights a double-digit lead at the intermission, 24-14.

Perkins had a team-high eight points at halftime while Johnson had seven points. SAPC held a 16-4 scoring advantage in the paint while shooting 34.4-percent in the first 20 minutes. Langford scored 11 of her 17 points in the first half as Erskine was held to just four field goals and 16.7% shooting from the floor.

A Thompson three-pointer gave St. Andrews its largest lead of the game, 40-25, with over 13 minutes left. The Fleet pulled to within seven points on three separate occasions in the final 12 minutes but the Knights preserved the victory by out rebounding Erskine 29-19 in the final stanza.

SAPC converting on 37.1% of their field goal attempts while the Flying Fleet only shot 26.3%. The Lady Knights had assists on 14 of their 23 made baskets including five assists by junior Desiree Jones (Tulsa, Okla.).

Thompson had game-highs of four 3-pointers and three steals.

Sophomore Audrey Timmerman (Aiken, S.C.) added 11 points for the Fleet. Timmerman and senior Kristy Vaughn (Yadkinville, N.C.) each had seven rebounds while Timmerman supplied three assists.

St. Andrews will play its final regular season game on Tuesday night when the Lady Knights host Conference Carolinas foe Barton College at 5:30 p.m. while Erskine hosts league rival Queens University of Charlotte at the same time Tuesday.
