HARTSVILLE, S.C.—Senior forward April Johnson (McColl, S.C.) scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for St. Andrews Presbyterian College but host Coker College won the Conference Carolinas women’s basketball showdown, 89-64, on Thursday evening at Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium. ]

Temeca Spain (Conway, S.C.) and Rebecca Kolbeck (Santa Paula, Calif.) combined for 44 points and 13 rebounds, helping the Lady Cobras (6-19 Overall; 5-13 Conference Carolinas) avenged a 79-72 loss against SAPC on January 24, 2008.

Johnson had a hot shooting hand for the Lady Knights (5-20; 4-14) making eight of her nine shots from the floor and all three of her free throw attempts.

Coker was able to take control of the game early holding St. Andrews without a field goal for the first eight minutes of the game building up a double-digit lead they would never relinquish. The Lady Knights cut the deficit to 12 points (41-29) at halftime with a 5-1 run in the final 70 seconds of the first half and a senior Jessy Perkins (Goldsboro, N.C.) basket on the opening possession of the second half pulled the visitors to within 10 points. However, a 19-2 run by Coker over the next five minutes ended any comeback hopes as the Lady Cobras cruised to the 25-point victory.

The Lady Cobras jumped out to an early lead and never looked back leading for the entire game. Coker held advantages in several statistical categories, including scoring 27 points off 20 St. Andrews turnovers including 13 steals. The Lady Cobras moved the ball well throughout the game dishing out 21 assists as a team, compared to the Lady Knights seven. Coker also held a slim 37-34 edge in rebounds. The Cobras shot 48.4-percent while SAPC was 40.0% accurate.

Johnson just missed recording her second double-double of the season by netting 19 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Senior Erika Thompson (Kalamazoo, Mich.) scored 12 points and freshman Kristen Zipkin (Canton, Ga.) bucketed 10 points. Senior Jackie Cromer (Greensboro, N.C) added eight points while Perkins finished with six points and six boards. Junior point guard Desiree Jones (Tulsa, Okla.) had team-highs of four assists and three steals.

Spain finished the game with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Kolbeck had 21 points and five rebounds. Kenya McCarthan (Hardeeville, SC) scored 13 points of the bench, and Lotta Aaltonen (Rauma, Finland) had 10 points with three rebounds.

St. Andrews will celebrate ‘Senior Day’ on Saturday afternoon when they host conference rival Erskine College. The Lady Knights coaching staff will recognize their seniors after the game that is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
