CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Junior guard Desiree Jones (Tulsa, Okla.) scored a game-high 16 points for visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College, but a much-deeper Queens University of Charlotte women’s basketball team was able to win the Conference Carolinas showdown, 70-49, on Monday evening in ‘The Oven’.
The Lady Knights, who were missing 50.4-percent of their scoring in seniors Danielle Norman (15.1 PPG) and Erika Thompson (13.4 PPG) due to injury, were only able to make 25.0% of their shots falling to 3-10 overall and 2-5 in the league.
The Knights, who were without the league leader in rebounding in Norman (10.6 RPG), were dominated by Queens on the glass. The Lady Royals (2-11, 2-4) finished with a 66-40 rebounding advantage including 33 offensive boards.
Freshman Kristin Zipkin’s (Canton, Ga.) second three-pointer in the first seven minutes of the game gave St. Andrews an early 13-11 lead. The Knights continued to lead by three, 16-13, after a Jones basket but Queens stormed into the lead for good with a 28-6 big run. St. Andrews was held to just one made field goal in that 10-plus minute surge by the Royals.
Zipkin, who scored eight of her nine points in the first half, scored the last hoop of the opening period to pull the deficit to 17 (41-24) at halftime.
The second half was played much more even with Queens barely out-scoring the Knights 29-25 but still rolling to the 21-point victory. QUC shot 33.3-percent for the game while SAPC only made 15-of-60 (25.0%) attempts. Queens committed more turnovers, 22-20, but dominated the scoring in the paint at 22-4.
Jones made 7-of-10 free throws en route to her career-high 16 points. Jones also provided team-highs of three assists and three steals.
Freshman Jacquelyn Adcock (Damascus, Md.) was the only other Knight to reach double-digits in scoring with 10 points. Adcock also led the Knights with a career-high seven rebounds. Zipkin’s nine points tied a career-high while senior April Johnson (McColl, S.C.) added six points. Both Zipkin and Johnson had six rebounds.
Marissa Hudley tied Jones for game-high honors in scoring bucketing 16 points for the Royals. Jacquia Winstead and Markeisha Hicks tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively. Both Winstead and Hudley had double-doubles with 12 and 11 rebounds. Winstead was flirting with a triple-double with a game-high seven assists.
St. Andrews next visits Conference Carolinas foe Erskine College (Due West, S.C.) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
