Anderson women's basketball rolls past SAPC

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Anderson University used a balanced scoring attack with six players scoring in double digits to defeat host St. Andrews Presbyterian College 85-49 in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon in Harris Court.

The Lady Trojans earn their fourth straight victory to start 2008 improving to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the league. The Lady Knights fell to 3-9 and 2-4.

Anderson controlled the game from the opening tip breaking out to a 23-0 lead before St. Andrews hit its first shot almost 10 minutes into the contest. The Trojans built their first half lead up to 31 (37-6) with 6:27 left but the Knights cut the deficit to 22 (45-23) at halftime with a 17-8 run.

AU shot 47.1-percent in the first half while SAPC only made 22.6%. Both teams scored nine points on free throws in the opening period while the Trojans held a 26-20 advantage on the boards. Knights senior Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) led all scorers at the intermission with 15 points while senior Nikki Anthony (Pickens, S.C.) and sophomore Korie Sellers led the visitors with 10 points apiece.

Norman would finish with a game-high 15 points as she was unable to play in the second half due to injury and the Trojans took advantage and rolled to the 36-point victory. Anderson held a 40-point advantage twice in the second half.

The Trojans controlled the boards, 47-37, and scored 29 points on 26 Knights turnovers. AU finished the game connecting on 48.5% of its shots from the floor while SAPC shot 30.5%.

Anthony and Sellers tied for team-high honors with 14 points apiece. Sophomore Shanice Wilson (Piedmont, S.C.) and junior Whitney Ketner (Spartanburg, S.C.) each bucketed 12; freshman Alexa Neal (Greensboro, N.C.) drained 11; and junior Keana Boyd added 10.

Junior Genia Holbrook (Toccoa, Ga.) and Neal led the visitors with nine and eight rebounds while senior Latrice Thomas dished out a game-high seven assists.

Norman was the only Knight in double-digits while the freshman duo of Kristin Zipkin (Canton, Ga.) and Jacquelyn Adcock (Damascus, Md.) each tallied seven points. Classmate Franchaze Waters (Annapolis, Md.) chipped in with six.

Senior April Johnson (McColl, S.C.) led all players with a game-high 10 rebounds.

St. Andrews next visits Conference Carolinas rival Queens University of Charlotte on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
