LAURINBURG, N.C.—The University of North Carolina at Pembroke women’s basketball team made 15 steals and scored 29 points off turnover en route to a 67-50 non-conference victory at St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Thursday evening in Harris Court.
The Lady Braves broke the game open in the first half, 39-21, and held on for the 17-point victory to improve to 5-4 on the season. The Lady Knights fell to 1-7 after committing 27 turnovers.
Freshman JaToya Kemp scored all 10 of her points in the first half helping the visitors to the commanding 18-point lead at the intermission. UNCP shot 41.7-percent in the opening period while the Knights turned over the ball 17 times in the first 20 minutes and shot 28.6% to fall behind.
The two squads played an even second half with the Braves maintaining a double-digit advantage lead for the whole stanza. UNCP built its lead to 24 points (65-41) before a late surge closed the gap for SAPC.
The Knights edged Pembroke on the boards, 42-41, behind seven rebounds from seniors Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) and April Johnson (McColl, S.C.). Freshman Jacquelyn Adcock also pulled down six boards for St. Andrews.
Norman led all scorers with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting and a perfect 8-for-8 accuracy from the free throw line. Senior Erika Thompson (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and freshman Kristin Zipkin (Canton, Ga.) followed for St. Andrews with nine and five points, respectively.
Senior Victoria Willis (Charlotte, N.C.) scored 10 of her team-high 16 points for the Braves in the second half while logging a game-high four 3-pointers and dishing out a game-high four assists.
Freshman Chevoya Jackson (Goldsboro, N.C.) was the third Lady Braves in double digits with 10 points. Kemp crashed the boards for a team-high seven rebounds.
UNCP finished the game shooting 39.4-percent while SAPC converted 33.3% of its attempts.
St. Andrews will return to Conference Carolinas play on Saturday when they host Lees-McRae College at 2:00 p.m. UNC Pembroke visits Peach Belt foe Armstrong Atlantic State University on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
