MURFREESBORO, N.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball defense held host Chowan University to just 13 points in the first half as the Lady Knights coasted to their first victory of the season, 63-50, on Wednesday night.
The St. Andrews ‘D’ held the Hawks to just 30.3-percent shooting as the Knights improved to 1-3 on the season. Chowan fell to 2-6.
For St. Andrews, senior Ericka Thompson (Kalamazoo, Mich.) led all scorers with 21 points on a 7-for-17 performance including a game-high three 3-pointers. Senior Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) scored seven of her 13 points from the free throw line while also adding a game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Desiree Jones (Tulsa, Okla.) added 11 points, six rebounds, and a game-high six assists. Senior April Johnson (McColl, S.C.) had her best shooting performance of the year draining 4-of-5 attempts for eight points while freshman Franchaze Waters (Annapolis, Md.) chipped in with six boards and four points.
The Lady Knights took control of the game in the first half building a 28-13 halftime lead. SAPC held the hosts to just 6-of-34 (17.6%) shooting in the opening period to take the 15-point advantage.
St. Andrews continued to play strong in the second half maintaining a double-digit lead for most of the second frame. Chowan never got any closer than nine points in the final 20 minutes and St. Andrews rolled to the 13-point victory while getting valuable playing experience to their reserves. All 13 Lady Knights played multiple minutes in the win while still building a lead as large as 19-points. St. Andrews drilled 12-of-13 (92.3%) free throws in the second stanza to put the strangle hold on the victory.
SAPC protected the ball well committing a season-low 12 turnovers while holding a slim 48-47 edge on the glass.
AJ O'Bannion paced Chowan with 15 points. She also grabbed four rebounds, had three blocks, and three assists in the loss. Freshman Brittany Nicholson joined O'Bannion in double-figures with 13 points. The freshman also grabbed six rebounds and had two assists. Keyon Sellers chipped in nine points, two assists, and four boards in the game.
St. Andrews will host their home opener on Saturday, December 15 against non-conference Saint Augustine’s College. First tip is slated for 2:00 p.m.
