WILSON, N.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball team used a 12-0 run midway through the second half to pull within striking distance of Conference Carolinas rival Barton College, but the hosts held on for the 68-58 victory in Wilson Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Sophomore point guard Esty Flores scored 14 points and had five steals and junior 6-foot-4 center Anita Fenner notched 12 points off the bench Tuesday night to power the Barton College women's basketball team to a 68-58 win over visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College.
The Lady Bulldogs, who also got 12 points from junior center Kendra Thomas, rose to 1-2 overall while SAPC slipped to 0-2. Both teams were opening Conference Carolinas play. Barton is off until Nov. 29, when it visits Coker College.
Sparked by Fenner, the Lady Bulldogs broke open a close game midway through the first half and led 34-25 at intermission. Barton exploded after halftime, going on an 18-5 run behind a dominating defense that forced 28 turnovers by the Lady Knights.
The Lady Knights won the battle of the boards, 46-43, but the Bulldogs prevailed with a balanced attack. Eight players had five or more points. Barton shot 35.7 percent (25-of-70) and St. Andrews canned 20-of-59 for 33.9 percent.
For St. Andrews, senior Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 16, junior Desiree Jones (Tulsa, Okla.) 15 and freshman Lalita Middleton (North Charleston, S.C.) 12. That trio accounted for all but 15 of the Lady Knights points. Norman registered her first double-double of the season with 10 boards while Jones just missed the mark with eight rebounds. Jones also had three 3-pointers and three assists.
