LAURINBURG, N.C.—David Johnson, fourth year Head Coach of the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball team, has revealed on Thursday the signing of seven student-athletes to national letters of intent to play basketball for the Lady Knights in 2007.
“Signing this class gives us a chance to compete for a conference championship this season,” said Johnson.
The St. Andrews women’s basketball team is coming off its best season in the schools NCAA Division II era. The Lady Knights won 20 games and earned their first-ever bid to the NCAA National Tournament.
Coach Johnson hopes to build on last year’s success with the addition of five freshman and two junior college transfers to a team that returns eight letterwinners.
“The program lost five seniors that had excellent careers at St. Andrews, but we return an excellent core,” explained Johnson. “I feel that we recruited the right players that will keep the program going strong on the court and in the classroom.”
The 2007 St. Andrews women’s basketball recruiting class includes:
Jacquelyn Adcock is a five-foot, 11-inch post from Damascus, Maryland. Adcock graduated from Damascus High School.
“We are happy to have Jacquelyn join our program,” expressed Johnson. “She is an aggressive, physical, and quick player that will provide quality depth at the post position for us.”
Brittany Johnston is a six-foot post from Holly Springs, North Carolina. Johnston graduated from Middle Creek High School.”
“ Brittany’s ability to score in the paint and away from the basket is a perfect fit for our program,” boasted Johnson. “I am excited to have Brittany coming here and I am looking forward to coaching her for the next four years.”
Desiree Jones is a five-foot, five-inch guard from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Jones’ first year at St. Andrews will be her junior year after transferring in from Palm Beach Community College.
“Desiree will be called upon to replace four-year starter Ashley Mitchell at the point position,” stated Johnson. “Desiree is quick, a hard worker, and a very good shooter. Once she learns our offense, defense, and her teammates; expect Desiree to have an All-Conference season.”
Kristen Zipkin is a five-foot, eight-inch guard from Canton, Georgia. Zipkin graduated from Woodstock High School.
“Kristen is the type of player that any coach would love to have on their team,” boasted Johnson. “She hustles, rebounds, takes charges, handles the ball, knocks down shots, and anything else that is asked of her. Kristen will be called upon to give quality minutes at the guard spot this coming season.”
Franchaze Waters is a five-foot, seven-inch guard from Annapolis, Maryland. Waters will begin her playing career at SAPC as a sophomore after transferring from Montgomery Community College.
“Fran is a nice addition to our program,” added Johnson. “She will bring us experience and size to the guard position.”
Jacqueline Moyer is a five-foot, nine-inch combo guard/forward from Augusta, South Carolina. Moyer graduated from North Augusta High School.
“Jacqueline is a very long and her size and athleticism will allow us to move her around,” informed Johnson. “She has the potential to develop into a very good player.”
Leondra Smith is a five-foot, six-inch guard from Eagle Springs, North Carolina. Smith graduated from Pinecrest High School.
“Leondra is a quality young guard who will give us depth at the guard position,” commented Johnson.
